Volleyball Sweeps Smith on Senior Day

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University volleyball team swept the Pioneers of Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon (25-20, 25-12, 25-10). Prior to the game Clark recognized five seniors playing in their final career game: Ana Patricia Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), Rayme Quiban (Seattle, Wash.), Justine Bohl (Amherst, Mass.), Rachel Webb (Celina, Texas), and Kacey Legare (Chicopee, Mass.).

HOW IT HAPPENED

-After the Cougars took a 13-7 lead in the first set, the Pioneers battled back to within one, 14-13. Clark went on a 7-1 run with three kills from junior Corina Picon (Irvington, N.Y.) and two kills from Mercado to extend their lead to eight, 22-14. Once again, Smith battled back with a 7-2 run of their own, highlighted by kills from sophomore Amy Hagen (Owings, Md.) and junior Iris Afanrchao (Windsor, Conn.) to come back within three, 23-20. Clark finished the set with a kill from Picon and a kill from Legare to take the 25-20 victory.

-After Smith took a 4-2 lead to start the second set the Cougars responded with a 9-0 run to pull ahead 11-4. Mercado posted a kill and three aces in the rally. Another 8-0 run by the Cougars put them ahead 20-6. Legare, Webb, and Cailtin Leggett (Durham, N.C.) all posted kills in the rally. The Pioneers were able to tally five more points in the set but Clark took the 25-12 finish on a Mercado kill.

-The Cougars started the third set on a 5-0 run before Smith called a timeout. After the timeout the Pioneers got on the board with a kill from Caleigh Jonson (Georgetown, Texas). Clark pulled ahead 11-2 with a kill and two aces from Mercado and then went on to score seven unanswered points to take a 15-point lead (18-3). Picon, Webb, and Legare all added kills in the rally while Quiban knocked home two aces. The Pioneers came together for five late points in the set, but Clark held on for the 25-10 final and took home the 3-0 sweep.

INISIDE THE NUMBERS

-Mercado led all players with a game high 13 kills, 18 digs, and five service aces. Legare added seven kills in the victory while Quiban posted 13 digs and first year Marimo Oka (Fukuoka, Japan) followed her with 10 digs. Webb handed out a game high 36 assists.

-Johnson led the Pioneers with five kills, Kimani Freeman (Newark, N.J.) handed out 17 of their 18 assists, and Hagen posted 10 digs.
