-The Lead: The Clark University volleyball team posted their third straight sweep with a 3-0 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory (25-11, 25-22, 25-16) over the Lyons of Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-An early 6-0 run gave Clark an 8-2 advantage to kick off the first set. They closed out the set on a 4-0 run that gave them a 14 point advantage, 24-10. Junior Corina Picon (Irvington, N.Y.) knocked home three kills while first year Paige Kacherian (Rowley, Mass.) added one and her classmate Margarita Perez-Maza (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) posted an ace to claim the 25-11 victory.
-The Lyons battled back in the second frame, opening up a 7-2 advantage following a 6-0 run that culminated in a number of Clark errors and a kill from senior captain Sarah Caggiano (Leonardtown, Md.). The Lyons continued to hold the advantage, pushing the score to 17-11 after senior captain Jamesa Allen (Orlando, Fla.) laid down a kill off an assist from sophomore Brayden Walden (McKinney, Texas). The Cougars battled back, using a 6-0 run to regain the lead for a 19-18 edge. Mount Holyoke rebounded to tie behind a kill from Allen and later closed the gap once more to 22-21 following a strike from rookie Sarah Bishop (Rutland, Mass.), but the home team capitalized on three of the final four points, including kills from Picon and Kacherian, to earn the 25-22 set win and take the 2-0 overall lead.
-Clark came out strong in the final set, using a three-point swing to take an 11-7 lead. The Cougars later used another run to open the margin to 18-11. Despite kills from senior Isabell Linde (Red Bank, N.J.) and junior Sasha Simine (Kitchener, Ont.), the Lyons were unable to close the gap further, falling to Clark 25-16 in the final set and 3-0 on the night.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Picon led the Cougars with 14 kills and senior Ana Patricia Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) was right behind her with 12 kills of her own. Senior Rachel Webb (Celina Texas) handed out a game high 35 assists while also adding 12 digs. First year Lily Meadows (Bradenton, Fla.) also added 12 digs in the victory.
-For the Lyons, Caggiano finished with a team-high eight kills to go along with five digs and three block assists. Simine added six kills with a block solo, while Allen had three kills, two block solos and four block assists. Senior Cameron Graham (Sarasota, Fla.) recorded a match-best 19 kills, while Walden added 22 assists and two service aces.
-Clark travels to Amherst College for a non-conference matchup tomorrow, Wednesday, October 17th at 7:00 p.m.
-Mount Holyoke returns to the court on Friday when it travels to Elms College for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference tilt against the Blazers.
