Volleyball Sweeps Rams and Lancers in Non-Conference Trimatch

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University women's volleyball team swept the Rams of Framingham State University (3-0) and the Lancers of Worcester State University (3-0) in a non-conference trimatch on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Clark 3, Framingham State 0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-19)

-Clark took an early 5-4 lead before a 3-0 run for the Lancers gave them the 5-7 advantage on an ace from Brenna Marquis. The Cougars responded with a 7-1 run highlights by kills from freshman Lily Meadows (Bradenton, Fla.), senior Ana Patricia Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), and Corina Picon (Irvington, N.Y.) for the 12-8 advantage. Clark never lost the lead again and another 4-0 run including two aces from Mercado extended their lead to 21-12. A kill from senior Kacey Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) wrapped up the first set at 25-15.

-The Rams took the first two points of the second set before Clark rallied four points in a row for the 4-2 go-ahead. Framingham tied it up at four on a kill from first year Jamiyae Mattress (Greenville, S.C.) and an ace from her classmate Alyssa Cafarelli (Peoria, AZ) before taking the 5-4 lead on a Clark error. An 8-1 rally that came on an ace from freshman Marimo Oka (Fukuoka, Japan), a kill from Legare, and an ace from Meadows, gave the Cougars a 17-10 lead and they never looked back. Mercado finished the set with back-to-back kills for the 25-16 final.

-The third set started similar to the second with the Rams taking an early 7-5 lead before Clark opened up a 5-0 run. This time Framingham State responded with a 4-0 run of their own to take back an 11-10 advantage. The set saw five more ties before Clark was able to finish on a 6-1 run for the 25-19 set victory and 3-0 match victory.

-Mercado led the first game with 11 kills and three aces. Oka posted 12 digs while sophomore Sophia Torina (Los Angeles, Calif.) handed out 16 assists.

-Brandee Thomas (North Kingstown, R.I.) led Framingham State with 10 kills. Cafarelli posted 13 digs and a game high four aces while Mackenzie Whalen (Norton, Mass.) dished out 19 assists.

Game Two: Clark 3, Worcester State 0 (25-20, 25-13, 31-29)

-The Cougars hopped out to a 3-0 lead to start the first set when Mercado knocked home three kills in a row. She added another kill to add to their 6-1 opening run. The Lancers tied the set at 12-12 after Lauren Murphy (Taunton, Mass.) and Megan Leavans (Storrs, Conn.) added a kill and service ace respectively. The set saw one more tie (14-14) before Clark gained a lead that they never gave up again (25-20).

-The second set was an even closer matchup. The Cougars pulled away with a late 5-0 run highlighted by kills from Legare and Picon, and capped off with an ace from Oka for the 21-14 lead. The Lancer came back within two points of the Cougars, but never caught up as Mercado wrapped things up with a kill for the 25-23 victory in set two.

-The third set saw a total of 19 ties before Clark was able to take away the 31-29 victory for the 3-0 sweep. Oka posted an ace and Legare hit home a kill before a game-winning ace from senior Rachel Webb (Celina, Texas) wrapped things up.

-Mercado led the Cougars with a game high 16 kills while Picon chipped in with 10. Oka posted three aces to go along with a team high 21 digs. Webb also served up three aces and added 31 assists in the victory.

-Leelle Tyler (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Natalie Gillis (Ashland, Mass.) each posted 10 kills for the Lancers. Leavens posted a game high 31 digs while Allie Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) dished out 42 assists.
