Cougars Sweep Trimatch with Anchormen and Bears

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University volleyball team earned two victories in a trimatch with the Anchormen of Rhode Island College and the Bears of Bridgewater State University on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars won all six sets of the day to cruise to 3-0 match victories over both visiting teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Clark 3, Rhode Island College 0

-Clark swept RIC in three sets: 25-14, 25-19, 25-12

-Clark led by as many as 11 points at four different times during the first set. RIC took a 6-5 lead early in the set but Clark went on an 11-0 run for the 17-6 lead and never looked back. The second set was closely contested; after Clark took a 17-7 lead RIC fought back to come within three, 21-18, but Cougars closed out the set on a 4-1 run to take the 25-19 victory. Clark took a large lead in set three after a 9-0 run put them ahead 17-4. They closed the victory on a 5-0 run for the 25-12 victory and the 3-0 match.

 -Senior Ana Patricia Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Corina Picon (Irvington, N.Y.) led the Cougars with 12 kills each. First year Marimo Oka (Fukuoka, Japan) had a game high 18 digs and senior Rachel Webb (Celina, Texas) dished out 26 assists.

-Senior Jillian Ward (Coventry, R.I.) led RIC with 14 kills and Marisa Brynes (Cranston, R.I.) added a team high 14 digs. Jacqueline Jutras handed out 21 assists for the Anchormen.

Game Two: Clark 3, Bridgewater State 0

-The Cougars defeated the Bears in three sets: 25-11, 25-13, 25-20

-Mercado led Clark with five kills in the first set while freshman Margarita Perez-Maza (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Picon chipped in with four kills.

-The Cougars took a 16-3 lead in set two before the Bears put together three points in a row to come within 10, but they would not come any closer as the hosts took away the 25-13 victory in set two.

-The third set was a closer match that saw seven ties. Bridgewater took an early 9-7 lead but the Cougars held on for the 25-20 finish and 3-0 match victory.

-Picon led the hosts with 15 kills and Mercado added 12 kills to go along with an impressive seven service aces. Senior Rayme Quiban (Seattle, Wash.) and Oka each added 10 digs while Webb handed out 22 assists.

-Senior Kayla Baril (Seekonk, Mass.) led the Bears with 10 kills and eight digs. Junior Erin Clifford (Hanson, Mass.) chipped in with seven kills of her own while sophomore Casey Holmes (Norton, Mass.) posted 21 assists.

-Clark is back in action on Tuesday, October 2nd when they travel to Wellesley College for a NEWMAC contest at 7:00 p.m.

-Bridgewater State hosts UMass.-Dartmouth on the same day at 6:00 p.m.
