-The Lead: The Clark University women's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought battle with the Bears of Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday evening. Coast Guard fought off five match points in the fourth set and rallied for the thrilling 3-2 win over the Cougars in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Bears won by set scores of 20-25, 25-19, 21-25, 27-25, 15-11.
-The Cougars took the first set 25-20. Coast Guard had its largest lead 12-8 and with the score tied 17-17, Clark would run off five straight points to take control.
-In the second set, Clark had a 12-10 lead before Coast Guard scored seven straight with freshman Nikki Sefcik (Arvado, Col.) serving to take a 17-12 lead as the Bears tied the match with a 25-19 win.
-Coast Guard held a 21-20 lead in the third set before Clark scored the final five points for the 25-21 win and a 2-1 advantage.
-Clark appeared to be on its way to an opening night win in conference play leading Coast Guard 24-20 in the fourth set before the Bears fought of four straight match points to pull even at 24-24.
-Corina Picon (Irvington, N.Y.) would record a kill to give Clark a fifth match point leading 25-24 before Coast Guard scored the final three to tie the match with a 27-24 win.
-In the fifth set, Coast Guard never trailed as the Bears scored the first four points. Clark would get as close as 11-10 before the Bears scored four of the final five points to complete the comeback.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Picon led Clark with 17 kills while senior Ana Patricia Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) added 16 kills. Senior Rayme Quiban (Seattle, Wash.) led the Cougars with 20 digs and freshman Marimo Oka (Fukuoka, Japan) added 17. Freshman Margarita Perez-Maza (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) had a team-high 33 assists for Clark.
-Freshman Amanda Dake (Victor, N.Y.) hit .405 and registered career and match highs with 18 kills and 31 digs. Junior Angelou Dunton (Seattle, Wash.) had 13 kills and 15 digs, sophomore Bridget Boyle (Dunwoody, Ga.) finished with 12 kills and freshman Maddie James (Rockwall, Texas.) had a career-high 11 kills for the Bears. Sophomore Veronica Hine (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 20 digs while freshman Lauren Hatfield (Gig Harbor, Wash.) finished with a career best 11 digs while Martin had a team-high 39 assists while Sefcik had a career-high 23 assists in the win for Coast Guard.
-Clark hosts a trimatch with NEWMAC opponent Babson College as well as non-conference foe Johnson & Wales (R.I.) on Saturday, September 15th at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.
-The Bears are back in action on Thursday when they host archrival Merchant Marine at 6:00.
