Worcester, Mass.—The Clark University women's volleyball program along with head coach, Mickey Cahoon is pleased to announce seniors Ana Patricia Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Rayme Quiban (Seattle, Wash.) as the 2018 team captains.
"Ana and Rayme have been leaders since they arrived at Clark and will make fantastic captains for us this season. They both have such a positive approach in their communication with teammates and play with an enthusiasm for the sport that inspires others," said Cahoon.
Mercado has appeared 91 career matches and recorded 939 kills as a right side hitter. She has 40 total assists and 353 total digs heading into her final season with the Cougars. Last season she recorded a season best 186 digs. Mercado will also lead Clark Athletics as the 2018-2019 Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President.
"For me, being captain means that the coach trusts a certain player with leadership skills on and off the court to handle with non-coach matters. It also means that you pull the team together, know the strength and weaknesses of each teammate, and set the best attitude, discipline, and respect for their teammates so that their teammates can replicate that same attitude. A good captain can hold a team together through thick and thin, win or loss, and keep everyone's eye on the prize…What I'm looking forward the most about the season is winning as a family. We're 18 girls on the team and it's very important for Rayme and me to treat each other as family. We win together and we lose together," said Mercado.
Quiban was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) New England All-Region Team and the AVCA Honorable Mention All-American Team. She was also named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Defensive player of the year. She led Clark and the NEWMAC in digs and digs per set last season with 546 total digs (5.41 digs/set). She was also named the NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the week three times this season and helped lead the Cougars to a NEWMAC Quarterfinal appearance.
"It has been an exciting past three years to be on the Volleyball team, and I am proud to carry on the torch to serve as Co-Captain with Ana this year. I am thrilled to welcome nine new teammates who contribute their own unique strengths to the team. I feel bittersweet about this season—on one hand I am extremely excited to see the development of the team, and on the other, I know this will be my last season of volleyball. I am most looking forward to thoroughly enjoying every moment I have on the court. From a leadership standpoint, I hope to be the teammate and friend that everyone can go to if they need support," said Quiban.
Volleyball opens their season on Saturday, September 1st when they host the Worcester City Volleyball Tournament with WPI, Worcester State University, and Husson University starting at 11:00 a.m. in the Kneller.
