-The Lead: The Clark University women's volleyball team battled to a 3-2 victory over non-conference opponent, UMass.-Boston Beacons on Saturday morning (22-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-12, 15-9).
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Beacons started the morning strong, earning two set wins over the Cougars to take a 2-0 advantage (25-22 and 25-23).
-The Beacons went on a 3-0 run to close the gap to 9-5 followed by a kill from Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) and an ace from Alex Gibbs (Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas).
-A pair of kills from junior Ana Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) helped the Cougars extend their lead to 11-5, but the Beacons came within one point (12-11) with back to back kills from Shi and Emilia Czapiewska (Saint Paul, Minn.).
-Clark went of a 4-0 run with an ace from Quiban and kills from Ramos and Kendra Campbell (North Kingstown, R.I.) to take a 17-12 lead but UMass.-Boston responded with a 4-0 run of their own to bring them within two point (18-16) following an ace from Macayla Chianco (Clearwater, Fla.).
-A 4-0 run and a 3-0 rally by Clark finished out the set and the Cougars took the final 25-18 victory to force a fourth set (2-1).
-Clark took a commanding 12-3 lead at the beginning of set four to set the tone. They took their largest lead of the set (23-9) on an 11-3 rally that saw two kills each from Kacey Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) and Ramos as well as an ace from Sophia Torino (Los Angeles, Calif.).
-The Cougars finished out the set with back to back kills from Ramos and Campbell for the final 25-12 victory and tied the match at 2-2 to force a fifth and final set.
-Clark clinched the 3-2 victory with a 15-9 final in the fifth set of the day with the Beacons. They started on a 3-0 run as Ramos continued her strong day with a kill for the first point. Mercado earned an ace to extend their lead to 2-0 and a Beacons error extended the early lead to 3-0.
-UMass.-Boston responded with three unanswered points of their own on two kills from Shi and a kill from Ariana Casignal (Melbourne, Fla.) (3-3).
-The Cougars and Beacons traded points until Clark went on two 3-0 rallies. Junior Rachel Webb (Celina, Texas) earned the match point on a service ace (15-9) and the Cougars took the 3-2 match victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Ramos led all players with an impressive 27 kills on the day. Torino helped lift the Cougars to victory with a game-high 29 assists while Quiban added 26 digs.
-Shi led the Beacons with 15 kills in the loss. Chianco posted a game-high 28 digs. Maslach and Carsen Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) recorded 21 and 20 assists respectively for UMass-Boston.
-Clark finished the day with a .217 combined hitting percentage while the Beacons finished with a .082 hitting percentage.
-UMass.-Boston hosts Keene State College on Wednesday, October 18th for a 6:00 p.m. match.
-Clark travels to Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday, October 17th for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) battle starting at 7:00 p.m.
