Cougars Take Two in Saturday Tri-Match




Match 1: Clark University 3, Wheaton College 0

Match 2: Clark University 3, Connecticut College 1

Records: Clark University (7-6, NEWMAC 2-2), Wheaton College (9-5, NEWMAC 1-2), Conn. College (6-4)

Location: Worcester, Mass. (Kneller Athletic Center)

The Lead: The Clark University women's volleyball team improved their record to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action with two wins on Saturday afternoon. They swept the Lyons of Wheaton College in match one of the day before playing four sets with the Camels of Conn. College in a 3-1 victory in match two. 


Match One:

-Clark took a 3-0 sweep with scores of 25-15, 25-16, and 25-20 over Wheaton College.

-The first set was back to back until Clark went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-4 lead that forced the Lyons to call a timeout.

-The Lyons never regained the lead though, coming close after a kill by Claire Cansler (Newhall, Calif.) to bring them within two (14-12).

-That would be as close as the visitors would get though as Clark went on a 5-0 run and a 3-0 run to clinch the 25-15 victory in set one.

-The Cougars came out strong in the second set, going on an immediate 9-0 run highlighted by two aces from Rayme Quiban (Seattle, Wash.) and a kill from Sophia Torino (Los Angeles, Calif.) (9-0).

-A spark came late for Wheaton as they went on a 4-0 run to close the score to 24-16 but the Cougars ended their stamina there and took the ultimate 25-16 victory.

-The third set was the closest of the match with a final score of 25-20.

-The Lyons took an early 1-0 lead and extended their lead to 6-4 early in the set.

-The Cougars regained the lead from there and never gave it back after a 7-0 run put them up 11-6.

-The Lyons came back within two points late in the match (22-20) following a kill from Cameron Mercer (Park City, Utah) and an error by the Cougars.

-The home team held Wheaton to 20 points and went on to score three unanswered points for the 25-20 victory.

-Ana Mercado (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) led Clark to victory each posting a game high nine kills. Torino and Kendra Campbell (North Kingston, R.I.) checked in with six kills each in the win.

-Torino led all players with 28 assists in the match while Mercado and Quiban posted three service aces each.

-Cathryn MacGregor (North Andover, Mass.) led Wheaton with eight kills while her teammates, Casey Dinga (Windham, N.H.) and Cansler recorded six kills each.

-Sophomore Becca Houghton (Emmaus, Penn.) checked in with a team high 24 assists while MacGregor tied with the Cougar's Quiban for the most digs in the match with 15.

-Houghton also earned three aces for the visitors.

Mach Two:

-Clark downed the visiting Camels of Conn. College 3-1. The Cougars took set one 25-16 before the Camels tied it up with a 28-26 victory in set two. The home team went on to take a 25-21 victory in the third set and a 25-18 score in the final set of the day to clinch the victory.

-Ramos led all players with 20 kills and 21 digs to lift the Cougars to victory. Mercado trailed that lead with 17 kills of her own.

-Torino recorded a match high 47 assists to go along with three aces in the victory.

-Senior Sam Hunter (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) led the Camels with 15 kills, 14 digs, and one ace.

-Elle Kass (Los Gatos, Calif.) led the visitors with 20 digs and two aces on the day.


-Clark travels to Emerson College on Tuesday, September 26th for a 7:00 p.m. NEWMAC contest.

-The Lyons are at MIT on Tuesday, September 26th for a 7:00 p.m. conference battle.

-The Camels travel to Eastern Conn. College on the same day for a 7:00 p.m. match.
