Worcester, Mass...The Clark women's volleyball team fell to AVCA national ranked #24 Tufts on Tuesday night in their season home opener. The Jumbos raced out to early leads in all three games to sweep the Cougars (25-21, 25-11, 25-13). The match featured two teams that reached the NCAA Tournament in 2016. The Cougars, who received an at-large bid and made their first NCAA appearance in the history of the program, fell in the regional semifinals. The Jumbos, also an at-large qualifier, reached the NCAA quarterfinals.
The Jumbos recorded 46 kills in the three games and held the Cougars to 28 kills. Tufts's Mackenzie Bright (Duxbury, Mass.) had 15 kills and .583 hitting percentage. Sophomore Kelly Kimo (North Canton, Ohio) led the Jumbos with 15 digs and Brigid Bell (Granite Bay, Calif.) had a solid match with eight kills and 11 digs. Angela Yu (Austin, Texas) and Rachel Furash (Westlake Village, Calif. ) had 21 and 18 assists respectively.
Clark's seniors Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Jacqueline Jimenez-Maldonado (San Francisco, Calif.) had eight kills a piece. Ramos added a nine digs while junior Rayme Quiban (Seattle, Wash.) had a team-high 10 digs. Junior Rachel Webb (Celina, Texas) and first-year Sophia Torino (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 11 and 10 digs respectively.
Clark falls to 2-1 while Tufts starts the season 1-0.
Clark will travel to the Trinity College Invitational on Friday, September 8 and Saturday September 9 to play Westfield State, Eastern Connecticut and Trinity. Tufts is back in action when they host the New England Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Jumbos will face RIT, Minn. - Morris and Marymount.
