Worcester, Mass. – Powered by 14 kills from senior Maritza Fair (The Bronx, N.Y.), the Clark University volleyball team opened up their 2010 season with a convincing 3-0 win over visiting Mount Ida College on Wednesday evening at the Kneller Athletic Center.
The win avenges a three-game losing streak to Mustangs for the Cougars and marks the second time in that last three seasons that Clark has opened up its season with a victory.
Clark raced out to a 10-0 lead in the first set before eventually cruising to a 25-13 win. The second set went to Clark 25-17 before the third match lasted until 30-28.
In addition to Fair’s big night, junior Kortney Kelley (Barnstable, Mass.) finished with a team-high 18 digs and freshman Rachel Spera (North Hollywood, Calif.) handed out 30 assists.
Also having standout performances for the Cougars were Amira Tranchell (Falmouth, Mass.), who finished with seven kills and Kristin McGinty (Vail, Colo.), who totaled five kills.
Clark returns to action on Tuesday when they visit regional power Eastern Connecticut.
