Worcester, Mass. - The Clark swim teams traveled to cross town rival, Worcester Polytechnical Institute on Friday to compete across three days in the prestigious Gompei Invitational. Fifteen teams from all over the Atlantic states converged to compete in Worcester. At the end of the event, Clark finished 14th with 278 points. Mira Siewert (Westbrook, Conn) broke her own school record in the 50-yard breaststroke (32.60) today in a time of 31.99.
"Overall we had a solid weekend they persevered and improved throughout the weekend. This meet is an important stepping stone as we close out the semester, prep for training trip and look ahead to championship season. The teams came together and supported each other in meaningful ways throughout the weekend which is how to get it done so I'm proud of them for that," said head swimming and diving coach, Paul E. Phillips.
During the first day of events, on the women's side, Amelia Muratori (Southbury, Conn) finished in the top 25 of a field over 100 in the 50 Yard Freestyle preliminaries. Quinn Mitchell (West Hartford, Conn) showed strongly for the Cougars in the preliminaries of the women's 100 Yard Butterfly finishing 39th in a field of 86 with a time of 1:02.58. Olivia Winters (Maplewood, NJ) swam strong in the 1650 Yard Freestyle finishing with a time of 21:20.18.
On day one, the men had solid efforts from Dan Broderick (Tolland, Conn). He finished with a time of 59.56 good enough for 63 in a large field in the 100 Yard Butterfly. Eric Corbert (Newton, Mass) swam tough in the 1650 Yard Freestyle and finished with a time of 18:13.27, picking up a crucial seven points for the cougars.
The women opened up day two taking 24th in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Finishing with a time of 1:47.57 was Elizabeth Cownie (Concord, Mass), Allison Dubick (Cornwall, NY), Quinn Mitchell (West Hartford, Conn), Amelia Muratori (Southbury, Conn). In the women's preliminaries of the 100 yard backstroke, Emma Bulman (Bridgewater, Mass) finished with a time of 1:12.89. Mitchell earned 18 points for the Cougars with 17th place in the 50 Yard Butterfly. In the finals of the 400 Yard Medley Relay, Dubick, Muratori, Mitchell, and Siewert gathered 8 points for the Cougars with their 4:23.70 effort finishing above teams from Colby-Sawyer and Babson.
On the men's side, day two started with Corbert finishing 35th in the 400 Yard IM with a time of 4:41.22. Will Russell (Cumberland, Maine) finished the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:02.53. Dylan Schrama (Taunton, Mass) earned 8 points with a 23rd place finish in the 50 Yard Butterfly. Julian Ortega (West Palm Beach, Fla) had a strong effort in the 200 Yard Freestyle prelims finishing in the top half of over 80 competitor field. Schrama grabbed 17 points in the 50 Yard Backstroke with a time of 27.17, teammates Russell, Sebastian Ortega (West Palm Beach, Fla), and Noah Liscord all finished in the money with 5, 4, and 3 points respectively. Rowan Moody (Ellington, Conn) won a crucial 30 points for the Cougars with his 3 mtr dive.
The women began day three with a strong effort of Siewert who gained eleven points on a 31.99 swim in the 50 Yard Breaststroke. Muratori, Dubick, Mitchell, and Alison Falder (New Milford, Conn) won 10 points with a 26th place finish in the 400 yard freestyle finishing with a time of 3:55.55.
On the men's side for day 3, Schrama collected 9 points, and Konstantin Drallios (Astoria, NY) collected two points in the Men's 100 Yard IM. Schrama finished with a time of 57.94 and Drallios with a time of 59.25. Drallios also finished 21st, good enough for eleven points in the 50 yard breaststroke. Russell and Cobert also finished with 6 and 5 points respectively in the 50 yard breastroke. In the. 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, Julian Ortega, Sebastian Ortega, Schrama, and Drallios finished 28th and gained a necessary 6 points for the cougars.
The Clark swim teams return to the pool December 8th against Umass Dartmouth.
