-The Lead: The Clark University women's basketball team used a second half rally to defeat The Blue of Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday evening. The Cougars outscored Wellesley 34-19 over the final 20 minutes en route to their 60-56 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Wellesley took a 15-9 lead with 2:03 to play in the first quarter when Caitlin Aguirre (El Paso, Texas) stepped behind the arc for three. First year Emily Sifferlen (North Andover, Mass.) responded with her own three-pointer with just 1:37 on the clock to bring the Cougars back within three (15-12). The Blue closed out the half with a 17-13 advantage.
-The Blue led by as many as 11 points in the second stanza and were able to hold onto an 11-point advantage heading into the halftime break. Aguirre hit two three-pointers in the second quarter and Alyssa Cho added six points on a 3-for-5 effort from the floor.
-Aguirre led the Blue with 16 points before the half while Sifferlen led the Cougars with nine points over the first 20 minutes.
-The Cougars came out of the break with some fire. They started the third stanza with a 7-0 rally that included layups from seniors Maya Kerstetter (Northampton, Mass.), Kacey Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) and Ogechi Ezemma (Hope Valley, R.I.), and sophomore Hannah Favaloro (Blackstone, Mass.) to take a three-point lead at the 3:39 mark (40-37). The Cougars were able to hold onto the lead heading into the final stanza with a one-point advantage, 46-45. Favaloro and Ezemma put up five points each in the third quarter to help Clark regain a lead.
-Jada Wiltz (Lafayette, La.) and Aguirre hit back-to-back jumpers to give Wellesley back the lead at the start of the fourth, 49-46. The game saw three more lead changes and a tie before the Cougars were able to clinch the 60-56 victory. Legare hit a three-pointer and a jumper with five minutes on the clock to help push Clark past Wellesley.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Sifferlen led Clark in scoring with 13 points from 3-for-8 shooting from behind the arc and a perfect 4-for-4 performance from the free-throw line. Legare added 12 points while Favaloro posted a double-double with 11 points and a game high 13 rebounds. Ezemma rounded out double-digit scoring for the hosts with 10 points and added nine rebounds and three blocks on the night.
-Aguirre led all scorers with 20 points for Wellesley. Kendall You Mak (San Francisco, Calif.) put up nine points and a team high 12 rebounds for The Blue.
-Clark shot 42.2% from the field while Wellesley shot 40%. The Cougars shot an impressive 75% from the free-throw line going 18-for-24. The Blue shot 42.9% from the charity strips going 3-for-7.
-Clark outrebounded Wellesley, 39-28.
-Wellesley forced Clark to turn the ball over 22 times and converted them into 25 points. Clark forced Wellesley to turn the ball over 18 times and turned them into 13 points of their own.
-Clark travels to Wheaton College on Saturday, January 26th for a NEWMAC contest at 1:00 p.m.
-Wellesley hosts Smith on the same day for a NEWMAC matchup at 1:00 p.m.
