Ezemma Joins Clark's 1,000 Point Scorers Club in Victory over Wheaton

-The Lead: The Clark University women's basketball team secured a victory over the Lyons of Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon. Clark was led by senior Ogechi Ezemma's (Mount Hope, R.I.) double-double of 16 points and 21 rebounds. Ezemma also secured her spot in Clark's history books by becoming the 22nd player in Clark Women's Basketball history to score 1,000 career points.

 HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Lyons of Wheaton College found themselves with their biggest lead of the game in the first quarter after a going on a 12-point run (17-3). After back to back three pointers from Clark's Ezemma and senior Kacey Legare (Chicopee, Mass.), the quarter ended with the Lyons up 17-9.

-Clark battled back at the beginning of the second quarter, closing the gap after three straight buckets from sophomore Hannah Favaloro (Blackstone, Mass.) (17-15). The Lyons responded with three pointers from senior Abby Hamilton (Gorham, Maine) and junior Natalie Wind (New Canaan, Conn.), and a pair of free throws from sophomore Mikayla Pucci (Hopkinton, Mass.). Clark battled back and ended the quarter a pair of free throws and a layup from Ezemma (30-24).

-The Cougars opened the second half with a seven-point run after baskets from Ezemma, Favaloro, and senior Maya Kerstetter (North Hampton, Mass.) (31-30). After a 33-33 tie at seven-minute mark, Clark regained the lead after a layup by Ezemma with just over six minutes remaining in the quarter. A three pointer from senior Cori Ouellette (Madison, Conn.) and a free throw from senior Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) put Clark up five with just over two minutes remaining in the period.

-Clark opened the final quarter with back to back three pointers from first year Emily Sifferlen (North Andover, Mass.) to take a nine-point lead with just over seven minutes to play in the game. The Lyons battled back after a layup from Pucci, a three pointer from sophomore Karli Retzel (Lee, Mass.), and a short jumper from Wind (49-47). After another exchange of baskets, Clark was able to hold onto their lead to secure the third straight win (52-50).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Ezemma lead all scorers with 16 points and season high 21 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Favaloro also chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds in the victory. 

-Wind and first year Sadie Shore (Portsmouth, N.H.) both poured in 10 for the visiting Lyons in the loss.

-Clark shot 27.7% from the floor while Wheaton shot a close 25.7%. The Cougars also shot 6-24 from behind the arc while Wheaton shot 8-41.
