Smith Secures Conference Victory Over Clark

THE BASICS

-Score: Smith College 71, Clark University 61

-Records: Clark (3-5, NEWMAC 0-2), Smith (6-2, NEWMAC 2-1)

-Location: Northampton, Mass.

-The Lead: The Clark University women's basketball team fell to the Pioneers of Smith College on the road on Wednesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Smith pulled ahead 7-0 at the 7:09 mark in the first quarter with a pair of layups from senior Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, Ga.) and a three-pointer from her classmate Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can.). The Cougars got on the board when senior Cori Ouellette (Madison, Conn.) stepped behind the arc for three (7-3). Sophomore Hannah Favaloro (Blackstone, Mass.) hit back-to-back baskets with under two minutes to play to pull Clark within two, 14-12, but Guest-Pritchett finished one more drive to the basket to give the hosts the 16-12 advantage heading into the second stanza.

-The Pioneers took an eight point lead with 6:28 to play in the second quarter when Bondi hit her second three of the game (25-18). First year Emily Sifferlen (North Andover, Mass.) added three points on an and-one play for the Cougars to bring them back within four with 5:58 on the clock (25-21) and a three from her classmate Camryn Richey (Upton, Mass.) at the 4:52 mark brought them within three (27-24). The Pioneers finished the half on an 8-2 run including nine points from Guest-Pritchett to take a 42-27 lead into the halftime break.

-Smith edged Clark in scoring in the third quarter, 13-11. Senior Ogechi Ezemma (Hope Valley, R.I.)  hit two jumpers and two layups to lead the Cougars with eight points in the third. Bondi and first year Katelyn Pickunka (Westhampton, Mass.) combined for 10 points, with five points each, to boost the Pioneers to an 18-point lead heading into the final stanza (55-38).

-Sifferlen added eight more points for Clark including one from behind the arc while senior Maya Kerstetter (Northampton, Mass.) hit two from three-point range in the final 10 minutes to help the Cougars outscore the Pioneers 23-16 in the final stanza. Despite Clark's run for a comeback, Smith held on for the 71-61 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Ezemma posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for Clark and added three blocks. Senior Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) led Clark in scoring with 16 points and Sifferlen came off the bench with 11 points.

-Guest-Pritchett led all scorers with 31 points and added a game high 18 rebounds in a double-double for the hosts. Bondi added 18 points and five assists and Pickunka came off the bench with 14 points and nine rebounds.

-Smith shot 41.1% from the field while Clark shot 37.1%.

-Clark shot 71.4% from the free-throw line and the Pioneers shot 65.6%

-Smith outrebounded the Cougars 50-26.

-Clark forced Smith to turn the ball over 28 times and scored 19 points off of those turnovers.
