-The Lead: The Clark University women's basketball team was defeated by the Spartans of York College (Pa.) on Thursday evening in their final game of the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla. Freshman Idalis Miranda (Naugatuck, Conn) led the Cougars with 14 points on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Both teams started slow, but it was the Cougars who got on the board first with a three-pointer made by Ogechi Ezemma (Hope Valley, R.I.) at the 8:47 mark. Senior Haley Wilder (Rindge, N.H.) extended Clark's lead to 5-0 with a successful drive to the basket just one minute later.
-York didn't score its first points until almost three minutes had passed. Beth Wiseley (Macungie, Pa.) tallied the Spartans' first points when she knocked down a pair of free throws. Following that, York converted three of its next four shots thanks to one from Sam Mocniak (Annapolis, Md.) and two from Katie Wagner (Glen Rock, Pa.). With just under 30 seconds left, Morgan Kuehne (Red Lion, Pa.) nailed a three pointer to cut the Spartan deficit to just two at 15-13.
-Miranda got things started in the second quarter as she drained a three-pointer to extend the Cougars lead to 18-13 with 9:46 on the clock.
- York raced out to a 10-2 run to take a 23-20 lead. Immediately following that, the Spartans put together another 9-2 spurt capped off by a pair of layups from Wagner. The Green and White's lead grew as large as 10 in the second period, but Clark finished with a three-pointer from Miranda just before the buzzer to close within five, heading to the break at 40-35.
-Both teams combined to score just 14 points in the third quarter after combining for 47 in the second. York poured in eight of them, and went over three minutes without a field goal twice in the period. Haley Luckabaugh (New Oxford, Pa.) drilled a three pointer with 1:07 left to open up a 48-41 lead. The Spartans defense held Clark to just six total points in the 10 minutes of action, on just 2-for-12 shooting.
-The defense continued to lock down the Cougars in the fourth quarter, holding Clark to just seven points, totaling just 13 points in the entire second half. Clark shot just 4-for-28 in the second half and turned the ball over 11 times. The Spartans shot just 22.7% during the final two quarters, but still managed to outscore Clark by nine points. The lead dwindled to just six, but Molly Day (York, Pa.) and Wagner converted buckets to expand it back to 10. Day hit another shot before Sammie Matteo (Tolland, Conn.) and Bailey Smith (Olney, Md.) finished off the Cougars 62-48.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Miranda led Clark with 14 points and five rebounds while Wilder added 10 points and five rebounds in the setback. Legare had a game high four steals on the night.
-Kuehne posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds in the victory. Wagner also added 14 points on the night for the Spartans.
-Clark shot 62.5% from the free-throw line as they went 10-for-16.
-York edged Clark in rebounding, 57-52. Clark turned the ball over 18 times and the Spartans converted those errors into ten points. Salem State turned the ball over just eight times.
-Clark travels to Wheaton College on January 3rd for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game at 7:00 p.m.
