-The Lead: Led by double-double efforts from junior Ogechi Ezemma (Hope Valley. R.I.), freshman Idalis Miranda (Naugatuck, Conn.) and senior Haley Wilder (Rindge, N.H.), the Clark University women's basketball team defeated the Falcons of Fitchburg State College on Wednesday evening in the first game of their 2017-2018 campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Falcons took the first lead of the game following a three-pointer made by Emma Thomson (York, Maine) just 15 second into the first quarter. They extended their lead to 5-0 after Thomson recovered a Cougar turnover and found Michaela Mctomey (Bellinghma, Mass.) who knocked down the layup for Fitchburg.
-With eight minutes to play in the first quarter the Cougars got on the board with a good jump shot from Wilder but the Falcons were able to extend their lead to six as Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.) notched a three- pointer (8-2).
-Clark tied the game at 10 after a made layup for Miranda and took their first lead of the game following a layup made by first year, Jamad Fiin (Boston, Mass.) that put the Cougars up 12-11.
-Clark was able to extend their lead to 20-13 to enter the second quarter.
-A made layup from Ezemma early in the second quarter gave the visitors a nine point lead (22-13) and they led by as much as 18 points to enter the halftime break. Ezemma finished the first half with 10 points for Clark.
-Thomson started scoring in the third quarter with a made three-pointer for the Falcons just 30 seconds into play to close Clark's lead to 43-26.
-Clark took their largest lead of the game following two points from Kacey Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) to put them up by 20 points (47-27) with 6:32 to play in the third quarter.
-Miranda led the Cougars in the second half with 11 points while Ezemma collected eight rebounds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-For Clark Ezemma registered a team-leading 19 points and 11 caroms, while newcomer, Miranda added to the mix with a double-double of 17 points and ten caroms to go along with eight assists and one steal.
-Fitchburg State was paced by freshman guard Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass.) with a nearly double-double of 15 points and nine rebounds as well as five assists and three steals in her collegiate debut, while Thomson added eight points, one rebound and one steal.
-Clark shot 41.5% (27-of-65) from the field, while limited to just 1-of-10 (10.0%) from three points range.
-Fitchburg State finished 19-of-75 (25.3%) overall and 25.0% (10-for-40) from beyond the arc.
-The Cougars controlled the glass, holding a 60-40 margin on the boards, while also finishing with an 18-15 margin in assists.
-Clark hosts the Worcester City Tip-Off Tournament this weekend (Nov. 17-18). They play Worcester State in the first round at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
