New London, Conn. – Clark University raced out to a huge first quarter lead and never looked back, sprinting to a 64-52 win over Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday evening.
Score: Clark University 64, Coast Guard 52
Records: Clark University 5-2 (2-1 NEWMAC), Coast Guard 2-6 (0-2 NEWMAC)
Location: Roland Hall Gymnasium, New London, Conn.
How It Happened:
The Scarlet and White backcourt combination of Aretha Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.) and Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) controlled the contest, totaling 40 points on 15-for-27 shooting as the Cougars inched closer to their win total from a season ago.
Clark jumped out to 17-2 first quarter advantage, but by halftime the Cougars were clinging to just a three point lead at 28-25.
That's when Sullivan took over, scoring 17 of her game-high 24 points in the third quarter. Even with that offensive explosion from Sullivan, Clark led the Bears just 44-40 with 1:04 left in the third quarter.
The Cougars would go on a 17-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters while holding the host Bears without a basket for nearly ten minutes and when the dust cleared, Clark was in front, 61-40 with 3:33 left in the game.
Inside The Numbers:
O'Gara added 16 points and a game-high eight assists in the win while Ogechi Ezemma (Hope Valley, R.I.) finished with 11 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars.
Gil Gerton led the Bears with 16 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, her third double-double of the season.
Clark will return to action on Saturday when they visit Nichols College for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff.
