Boston, Mass. – For the first time in her career, Clark University junior lead guard Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) has been named the New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball offensive player of the week it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
O'Gara picks up the award after a season-opening 2-1 week where she averaged 20 points, 5.7 assists and 4.0 steals per game.
In the Cougars' season opening win over Fitchburg State, O'Gara pumped in 25 points on 9-for-15 shooting to go along with five assists and five steals. Then in a blowout win over Becker in the consolation game of the Worcester City Tournament, she racked up a 20 points, seven assists and five more steals as the Cougars rolled to victory and she earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
In the Scarlet and White's 70-61 loss to Worcester State on Friday, O'Gara totaled 15 points, four assists and two steals.
Through the first three games of the season, O'Gara leads the NEWMAC in scoring (20.0 ppg), free throws made (21), free throws attempted (30) and is second steals (4.0 spg) and third in assists (5.7 apg).
O'Gara and the 2-1 Cougars will return to the hardwood on Tuesday with an early afternoon home contest against Anna Maria. Tipoff is slated for 4:00 p.m.
