Cougars Battle in Setbacks to No. 21 Brandeis

THE BASICS

-Score Game One: Brandeis University 9, Clark University 0 – 5 innings

-Score Game Two: Brandeis University 6, Clark University 3 – 8 innings

-Records: Clark (9-19), Brandeis (20-1-1)

-Location: Worcester, Mass. (O'Brien Field)

-The Lead: The Clark University softball team fell to the No. 21 nationally ranked Judges of Brandeis University in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The Judges took a 9-0 shutout in five innings in game one of the day before the Cougars battled with them into extra innings and ultimately fell 6-3 in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Brandeis 9, Clark 0

-The Judges put up two runs in the top of the first when J Fujita earned the first RBI of the game when she put the ball in play to score senior Keri Lehtone (Oneco, Conn.). With two outs on the board junior PJ Ross (Kingston, N.H.) homered for the second run of the inning for the early 2-0 lead.

-The visitors added two more runs in the top of the third. Ross started things off with a single down the left field line and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. First year Sydney Goldman (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) singled to center field to move Ross to third who eventually scored on a fielding error by the Cougars. With one out on the board Goldman came home for the 4-0 lead.

-Brandeis used five runs in the top of the fourth to pull away with the 9-0 lead. Senior Marissa DeLaurentis (Centereach, N.Y.) singled through the left side to score Ross for the 5-0 advantage. Goldman came home when sophomore Bridget Cifuni (Georgetown, Mass.) walked with the bases loaded before first year Brittany Dean (Nanaimo, BC) earned a RBI with a single to center that scored DeLaurentis (7-0). Lehtone and first year Marley Felder (Miami, Fla.) grabbed the final two RBI of the game when sophomore Melissa Rothenberg (Lawrenceville, N.J.) and Cifuni both scored unearned runs for the 9-0 final.

-First year Francesca Cirone (Franklin Square, N.Y.) put up Clark's lone hit of the game when she drilled one up the middle in the bottom of the fourth to put sophomore JC Urella (North Grafton, Mass.) in scoring position. Sophomore Isabella DiOrio (Lincoln, R.I.) walked to load the bases for Clark before the Judges were able to retire the next three batters to hold on to the shutout.

-Ross led the Judges at the plate going 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored. DeLaurentis finished 1-for-2 on the day with two RBI and one run scored.

-DiOrio falls to 3-4 on the season as she went all five innings for the Cougars, struck out three batters, allowed 13 hits, and nine runs scored (four earned).

-Goldman improves to 9-0 this season. She pitched all five innings for the Judges, struck out 11 batters and allowed just one hit.

Game Two: Brandeis 6, Clark 3

-Clark took the early lead, putting up one run in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Christina Kopacz (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) led off with a single to right field and moved to second when senior Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.) laid down the sacrifice bunt. Cirone scored Kopoacz when she fouled out to right field for the 1-0 lead. Clark was able to load the bases again before Brandeis secured the third out leaving the three base runners stranded.

-The Judges responded with two runs in the top of the second. Junior Scottie Todd (Tampa. Fla.) led off with a single through the left side and with two outs on the board first year Ashleigh Fultz (Silver Spring, Md.) singled to left field to score Todd and freshman Amidori Anderson (Sparks, Nev.) for the 2-1 lead.

-The visitors extended their lead to 3-1 in the top of the third with an RBI single up the middle from Rothenberg that scored Fujita. The Cougars got the last out of the inning and left three runners on base.

-Clark came within one of Brandeis in the bottom of the third. Barksdale led off with a single through the right side and scored on a double to deep right center field by first year Jessica Martin (Winthrop, Mass.) (3-2).

-Senior Sarah Woods (Littleton, Mass.) led off with a walk for the Cougars in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Hannah Gennell (Ambler, Penn.) came in to pinch run for Woods and moved to second on wild pitch. Sophomore Francesca Cocca (Tewksbury, Mass.) and first year Kylie McCabe (Rumson, N.J.)  walked to load the bases before a walk for Kopacz scored Genell to tie the game at 3-3 with no outs. The Judges used two strikeouts and a force out at third to end the inning.

-After three scoreless innings Brandeis was able to put up three runs in the top of the eighth to claim the final 6-3 victory.  

-Todd led the Judges at the plate in game two going 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored. Fultz finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs in the victory.

-Kopacz led Clark at the plate going 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Martin finished game two, 1-for-2 with one RBI. Clark finished game two with a total of five hits.

-Todd earned the victory on the mound for Brandeis in 4.2 innings pitched. She struck out seven batters and allowed just one hit as she improves to 10-1 on the season.

-Woods took the loss on the mound in eight innings pitch for the Cougars and drops to 2-9 this season. She struck out two batters and allowed just one earned run scored on 12 hits for the Judges.

-Clark travels to Emerson College for two New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference games on Friday, April 19th. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.

-Brandeis hosts Worcester State on Wednesday, April 17th for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
