Softball Takes One in NEWMAC Twinbill with Wheaton

THE BASICS

-Game One: Clark University 9, Wheaton College 2

-Game Two: Wheaton College 8, Clark University 0

-Records: Clark (9-17, NEWMAC 3-11), Wheaton (19-13, NEWMAC 5-9)

-Location: Norton, Mass. (Clark Softball Field)

-The Lead: The Clark University softball team split in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action with the Lyons of Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars used nine hits in game one to propel them to a 9-2 final victory before falling to the Lyons 8-0 in five innings in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Clark 9, Wheaton 2

-Clark hopped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Junior Christina Kopacz (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) led off with a single to second base and moved into scoring position on a single from senior Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.). Sophomore JC Urella (North Grafton, Mass.) loaded the bases when she walked before first year Francesca Cirone (Franklin Square, N.Y.) earned two RBI with a single to left field for the 2-0 lead. First year Kylie McCabe (Rumson, N.J.) sent the third run home with a single to shortstop for the 3-0 advantage.

-Wheaton put up two runs in the bottom of the second on sacrifice flies from sophomore Clara DeCarvalho (Franklin, Mass.) and first year Katelyn Barton (Andover, N.H.) to pull within one of the Cougars, 3-2.

-Barksdale scored on a wild pitch and first year Jessica Martin (Winthrop, Mass.) homered in the top of the fifth to put Clark back up by three, 5-2.

-The visitors added four more runs in the top of the sixth with a three RBI double up the middle from Urella and a run scored on a wild pitch for the final 9-2 victory.

-Urella finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored and McCabe went 2-for-3 with one RBI for the Cougars. Cirone had a 1-for-4 day at the plate with two RBI while Martin finished 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored.

-Senior Taylor Erickson (Natick, Mass.) earned the win on the mound for the Cougars in 4 innings pitched. She struck out one batters, allowed three hits and no runs scored and improves to 3-5 on the season.

Game Two: Wheaton 8, Clark 0 – 5 innings

-After two scoreless innings the Lyons got on the board in the board in the bottom of the third. Barton led off with a double to left field, moved to second on a bunt by sophomore Hannah Arkin (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), and came home when she stole second (1-0). Senior Jade Assad (Lambertville, N.J.) earned an RBI with a single up the middle that scored Arkin for the 2-0 lead.

-Wheaton used six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fifth to pull ahead 8-0. An RBI single from first year Sarah Pritchard (Malta, N.Y.) plated the first run of the inning, which was followed by an RBI double to right center from Assad. Leading 4-0, Wilson stepped up to the plate, drilling a double of her own to left field, scoring Assad. Sophomore Jessica Nardozza (Chester, N.H.) knocked in senior Shelbi Wilson (Peabody, Mass.) with the next at-bat with a single down the right-field line. A passed ball allowed Nardozza to score later in the inning before a single to center from Barton ended the contest. 

-Junior Sarah Woods (Littleton, Mass.) falls to 2-8 on the season in her four innings pitched today.

-Pritchard improves to 9-1 on the season. She pitched all five innings, allowed four hits and struck out seven batters.
