Softball Suffers Losses to Lions and Britons

GAME ONE: Clark University vs. Penn State Altoona

-Score: Penn State Altoona 8, Clark University 2

-Records: Clark (4-3), Penn State Altoona (3-4)

-Location: Naples, Fla. (North Collier Park)

-The Lead: The Clark University softball team suffered an 8-2 loss to the Lady Lions of Penn State Altoona in game one of the day at North Collier Park in Naples, Florida. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Lions got on the board in the top of the second inning. First year Sidney Lewis (Smithmill, Penn.) got things started with a double to right field before sophomore Olivia Miller (West Newton, Penn.) sent a long ball to center field to send her home for the 1-0 lead.

-Clark tied it up in the bottom of the inning when sophomore Kelsey Joyce (Leominster, Mass.) knocked a hard hit ball up the middle that put first year Kaylee Gibson (Northfield, Mass.) in scoring position at second base. Joyce later crossed home on a two-out fielding error as the teams headed into the third tied 1-1.

-The Lions added two more runs in the top of the third. Abby Showers sent a double to left field to put sophomore Ellie Leyo (Irvona, Penn.) in scoring position at second. A single to right field from her classmate Meghan Marasti (Pittsburgh, Penn.) scored Leyo and a sacrifice fly to left from senior Haley Giedroc (Howard, Penn.) sent Showers home for the 3-1 lead.

-The Cougars were able to load the bases in the bottom of the third but Penn State Altoona left them on base as they got the third out to hold onto the two-run lead heading into the fourth.  

-The Lions added two more runs in the top of the fourth with another RBI from Giedroc and one for Lewis for the 5-1 advantage.

-The Cougars loaded the bases again in the top of the fifth with hits from JC Urella (North Grafton, Mass.), Gibson, Kylie McCabe (Rumson, N.J.), and Alexis Redish (Howell, N.J.), but the Lion's defense was able to hold them to just one run (5-2).

-Penn State Altoona racked up three more runs in the top of the seventh with RBI singles from Abby Allenbaug (Patton, Penn.) and Showers. Their final run was unearned and scored by Cassidy Stover (Spring Mills, Penn.) as they took the final 8-2 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Urella led the Cougars at the plate as she finished a perfect 4-for-4. Gibson finished with a 1-for-3 day and one RBI.

-Marasti went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs while Giedroc went 1-for-4 with two RBIs as well. Showers finished with two runs scored and one RBI on a 2-for-4 showing at bat.

-The Lions totaled 12 hits on 33 at bats.

-Clark collected nine hits in their 30 at bats.

-Lewis earned the win on the mound for Penn State Altoona as she improves to 1-1 this season. She went seven innings, allowed nine hits one earned run, and struck out eight batters.

-Junior Sarah Woods (Littleton, Mass.) falls to 1-2 on the season as she started on the mound for Clark and pitched 2.1 innings before Redish came in for the final 4.2 innings. Redish struck out two batters.

GAME TWO: Clark University vs Albion

-Score: Albion College 8, Clark University 1

-Records: Clark (4-4), Albion (3-4)

-Location: Naples Fla. (North Collier Park)

-The Lead: The Britons of Albion College avenged its Monday loss to the Clark University softball team with an 8-1 victory over the Cougars on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Junior Rebecca Rodriguez (Capac, Mich.) clubbed a three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to propel the Britons to an early 3-0 lead. Rodriguez drove in her fourth run with her third hit of the game in the sixth.

-Albion used an unearned run in the third and an RBI from first year Morgan Deckrow (Davison, Mich.) that scored sophomore Grace Connolly (Chicago, Ill.) who had ripped a double in the bottom of the fifth to pull ahead 5-0 after five complete innings.

-The Cougars got a run back in the top of the sixth on an RBI single to left center from McCabe. The Britons went on to score three more runs in the bottom of the inning to take the ultimate 8-1 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-First year Sarah Berube (Scarborough, Maine) was 2-for-3 at the plate while McCabe went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

-Rodriguez led the Britons going 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Sophomore Estacia Martinez (Rapid Rive, Mich.) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

-The Cougars collected eight hits on 27 at bats while Albion finished with 12 hits in their 30 plate appearances.

-Sophomore Isabella DiOrio (Lincoln, R.I.) falls to an even 2-2 on the season as she pitched four innings, allowed six hits, and struck out one batter.

-Deckrow earned the victory on the mound for Albion. She pitched six innings, allowed seven hits, and struck out one batter.
