Cougars Shut Out Emerson in Game Two on Senior Day

The Lead: The Clark University softball team split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader with the Lions of Emerson College on Friday afternoon. Emerson shutout Clark to start off the day before they kept the Lions scoreless in a 6-0 victory in game two. Prior to the games Clark recognized four graduating seniors for Senior Day: Sami West (Gonic, N.H.), Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.), Leah Bodin (Andover, Vt.) and Anjelica Gonzalez (Merrimack, N.H.).


GAME ONE: Emerson 4, Clark 0

-Neither team crossed a run through the opening two frames until Emerson brought in the game's first pair of runs in the top of the third.

-Senior Jillian Gearin (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) barreled a two-bagger into the left center gap to drive in the first Emerson run before junior Alena Jones (Woodinsville, Wash.) drew a bases loaded walk.

-Neely Eddleston (West Wareham, Mass.) continued to blank the Clark bats and thus allowed Emerson to give her even more run support within the sixth and seventh innings.

-After sophomore Marisa DeFranco (Falls Church, Va) batted the third Emerson run in on a single into left, Kallista Leonardos (El Granada, Calif.) launched her fourth homer of the season over the fence and sealed the Lions' 4-0 win.

- Leonardos and DeFranco each paced the Emerson bats in a 2-for-3 day as Leonardos collected a home run, one RBI and plated three runs and DeFranco had a pair of singles with one RBI.

-Jessica Urella (North Grafton, Mass.) and West had the two hits against Eddleston and each finished 1-for-3 on the day for Clark..

-Eddleston picked up her 13th win in a complete game shutout, her fourth of the season, where she surrendered a pair of hits to go with one walk and seven strikeouts.

-Foley surrendered four runs on seven hits through a seven inning outing and struck out two batters while she walked six.

GAME TWO: Clark 6, Emerson 0

After taking the 1-0 lead to start off the first behind a double from Emily Vincent (North Grosvenordale, Conn.), Clark put together a four-run fourth frame to push its lead to 5-0.

Clark began the fourth with its second run being driven in on a grounder to the shortstop before junior Taylor Erickson (Natick, Mass.) batted DeFranco's pitch into the left center gap to drive in a pair with the lead at 4-0.

-Kelsey Joyce (Leominster, Mass.) wrapped up Clark's scoring in the fourth when she followed Erickson with an RBI double of her own to give the hosts a five run lead.

-The Cougars iced the 6-0 win in the home half of the sixth thanks on Erickson's third hit of the day making its way into right center.

-Three Lions collected one hit, including Gearin, Leonardos and freshman Lindsey Lowe (Porter Ranch, Calif.).

-Vincent powered the Clark bats in a 3-for-3 day with two singles, double, one run and an RBI, while Erickson drove in three runs and Urella plated two runs.

-DeFranco lasted five innings on the mound and allowed six runs (two earned) to cross on ten hits while she struck out one.

 -West blanked Emerson through seven innings on three hits and four walks and struck out five.


-Clark will also be on the road tomorrow at Wellesley for a twin bill starting at 12:00 p.m.

-Emerson remains on the road tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at Wheaton (Mass.) starting at 12:00 p.m.
