-The Lead: The Clark University Softball team split a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games with the Lyons of Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon. Senior Sami West (Gonic, N.H.) knocked down a walk-off RBI single right up the middle in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Clark the 4-3 victory in game one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Clark 4, Wheaton 3
-After three scoreless innings Wheaton put two on the board in the top of the fourth when junior Lily Ongkiko (Joliet, Ill.) crossed home on a Cougar error and Jade Assad (Lambertville, N.J.) doubled to left field to score Shelbi Wilson (Peabody, Mass.) (2-0).
-Clark responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Kendra Walker (Cumberland, R.I.) reached on an error by the shortstop and advanced to second when freshman Kelsey Joyce (Leominster, Mass.) moved her with a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Christina Kopacz (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) singled to right field and a fielder's choice play on Leah Bondin's (Andover, Vt.) at bat resulted in the Cougar's first run as Walker crossed home plate (2-1).
-First year Jessica Urella (North Grafton, Mass.) sent and RBI single to center field to score Bodin before her classmate Emily Vincent (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) doubled to deep right center to send Urella home for the 3-2 lead heading into the sixth.
-Wheaton scored in the top of the seventh to tie the game when freshman Lindsay Whittles (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored an unearned run for the Lyons (3-3).
-The Cougars heated up just in time with three hits in the bottom of the seventh. Kopacz singled up the middle to get things started and Bodin moved her to second when she laid down a sacrifice bunt. Urella singled to right field and put Kopacz on third before West sent the winning run across the plate with a single up the middle for the final 4-3 victory.
-Urella and Bodin went 2-for-4 with one RBI each in game one. West was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
-Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.) earned the win for Clark pitching seven innings and recording a strikeout. She improves to 3-7 this season.
-Senior Allison Cox (Torrance, Calif.) took the loss going 6.1 innings while giving up 10 hits and four earned runs. She falls to 4-9 on the season.
Game 2: Wheaton 8, Clark 7
-Clark rolled off of their momentum from game one, putting up the first run of game two in the bottom of the second inning. West recorded a hit down the right field line and with two outs Anjelica Gonzalez doubled down the left field line to send her home for the 1-0 lead.
-Wheaton responded in the top of the third with a run of their own. With two outs Whittles singled up the middle and after stealing second base Jessica Nardozza (Chester, N.H.) doubled to left field and sent her home to tie the game at 1-1.
-The visitors added three insurance runs in the top of the fourth when Assad scored on a wild pitch and Chloe Woodward (Bellingham, Mass.) and Hannah Arkin (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) both scored unearned runs (4-1).
-Wheaton added two more runs in the top of the fifth. Wilson singled down the left line and Assad followed her with a double to centerfield. Emily Schlapak (Dover, N.H.) earned two RBIs on a sacrifice fly out to center field as the Lyons took a 6-1 lead.
-A two hit, three run inning in the bottom of the fifth brought the Cougars back into the game. Bodin sent an RBI single to left center field to score Walker and Urella doubled to left to scored Bodin and Kopacz as Clark trailed by just two runs heading into the sixth, 6-4.
-Wheaton extended their lead back to four runs with two runs scored in the top of the seventh (8-4). The Cougars started a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning when Bodin singled up the middle. Vincent doubled to deep left center field to score Bodin and West followed up with a two RBI single to center field (8-7). The Cougar's rally ended there as the Lyons clinched the ultimate 8-7 game two victory.
-West led Clark at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Urella followed her lead with a 1-for-3 day at the plate with two RBIs. Bodin collected two hits and an RBI in the setback.
-West took the loss for Clark going four innings while recording five strikeouts and allowing just two earned runs. She falls to 2-7 on the season.
-Cox earned the win, pitching 4.2 innings, striking out two batters, allowing five hits and four earned runs. Assad came in to pitch 2.1 innings and got the save for the Lyons with three strikeouts.
-Clark hosts Worcester State University in non-conference action on Tuesday, April 17th for a double header starting at 3:00 p.m.
-Wheaton hosts Tufts on Sunday, April 15th for two games starting at 12:00 p.m.
