-The Lead: The Clark University softball team dropped two New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games with the Bears of the Coast Guard Academy on Friday afternoon. The Cougars are back in NEWMAC action tomorrow at Smith College.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Coast Guard 6, Clark 0
-The Bears got on the board in the first inning when an RBI single to right center from sophomore Audrey Bartz (Arlington, Va.) scored freshman Charlee Kraiss (Lake Havasu City, Ariz.) for the 1-0 lead.
-The hosts added a run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 3-0. Sophomore Claire Hurley (Sophomore, Conn.) singled to third to score Bartz in the fourth (2-0) and a double to left center from senior Emma Hvozdovich (Palm Harbor, Fla.) sent sophomore Carly Hattman (Egg Harbor, N.J.) home for the 3-0 advantage.
-The Bears put up three more runs in the sixth included an RBI single bunt from Hattman to clinch the 6-0 victory.
-Hattman led the Bears offensively going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.
-Senior Anjelica Gonzalez (Merrimack, N.H.) had a 2-for-3 day at the plate for the Cougars.
-Julia Ferris (Falls Chruch, Va.) earned the win for the Bears pitching all seven innings while recording five strikeouts and giving up just four hits. She improves to 6-2 on the season.
-Senior Sami West (Gonic, N.H.) took the loss on the mound going five innings, striking out two batters and allowing just four earned runs.
Game 2: Coast Guard 9, Clark 1
-The Cougars scored their first run of the day in the first inning of game two. First year Jessica Urella (North Grafton, Mass.) started things off with a single, bunt to get on base. With two outs a single up the middle from West scored Urella for the early 1-0 lead.
-The Bears recorded five hits and six runs in the bottom of the first. Hvozdovich tripled to deep right field to tie the game at 1-1 when Kraiss crossed home plate. Senior Casey Cruzpino (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) earned an RBI when she singled down the right field line to score sophomore Courtney McKenna (Sparta, N.J.). Emily Hogan, Hurley and Hattman all recorded RBI singles to close out the inning with the Bears leading, 6-1.
-Hvodozdovich recorded her third hit of the day when she homered to left field in the bottom of the second inning (7-1).
-Coast Guard added another run in the bottom of the third. McKenna earned an RBI when she singled down the right field line to score Hvozdovich for the 8-1 advantage.
-The Bears earned the last run they needed to wrap up the game in the bottom of the fifth. McKenna sent Kraiss home with an RBI single up the middle for the 9-1 victory.
-Hvozdovich led Coast Guard going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
-West got a hit and an RBI for the Cougars.
-Freshman Sydney Arendt (Manistee, Mich.) earned the win for the Bears pitching all five innings, striking out four batters and giving up just three hits and one earned run. She improves to 5-1 on the season.
-Brenna Foley took the loss on the mound and falls to 2-4 this season.
-Clark travels to Smith College tomorrow, March 31st, for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) double header starting at 12:00 p.m.
-Coast Guard travels to MIT tomorrow for a pair of NEWMAC games in Cambridge, Mass. starting at 12:00 p.m.
