SHREWSBURY, Mass. - The Clark University women's rowing team hosted the Head of the Snake Regatta at Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday afternoon, with the varsity eight putting together a program-best performance at the race while the second varsity and novice varsity had strong days on the water.
The first V8, led by Sophie Spiliotopoulos (Arlington, VA.) in the coxswain seat, coasted to fifth place in the event - good enough for a program-best at the Head of the Snake. The Cougars finished the race with a time of 17:01.7, just 30 seconds off the pace of the winner of the women's collegiate eight WPI (16:29.2).
Clark University's second varsity eight posted a 19th place finish overall with a mark of 19:09.9 for the day. The Cougars, led by coxswain Veronica Gould-Schultz (Arlington, Va.), finished fourth out of the seven second V8 boats racing, edging Connecticut College (19:18.7), Amherst (19:23.5) and Simmons (20:02.6).
The novice eight also enjoyed a solid day, despite having little time on the water in the week leading up to the Head of the Snake. The crew, led by Ruqayah Al-Ashabi (Hopkinton, Mass.) in the coxswain seat, finished fourth out of 10 teams competing in the women's collegiate novice eight. The time of 20:52.1 from the novice 8 trailed WPI (19:39.3) and race winner MIT (16:50.6).
