Worcester, Mass. – On what most might consider an ideal day for racing the Clark University rowing team continued its ascension into the elite realms of the New England rowing community, putting all three of its boats into the finals at the New England Rowing Championships on Saturday afternoon.
The men's varsity four consisting of coxswain Freya Pollock (Asheville, N.C.), Tom Voillier (Sunnyvale, Calif.), Jamie Chaitman (Old Chatham, N.Y.), Grant Madigan-Kolstad (Concord, Mass.) and Nick Reynolds (Lenox, Mass.) finished third in their heat in a time of 7:11.8 behind Fairfield (6:59.6) and Bowdoin (7:05.1) to advance to the grand final. There, they churned out a time of 7:20.2, just behind Wentworth (7:19.9). Middlebury claimed the event title with a time of 7:01.3 and they were followed by Bowdoin (7:04.5) and WPI (7:04.6).
Meanwhile, on the women's side, the varsity four made up of coxswain Kate Barnett (West Simsbury, Conn.), Lydia Warters (Simsbury, Conn.), Cailyn Keely (Takoma Park, Md.), Jacqueline Jimenez-Maldonado (San Francisco, Calif.), and Brooke Wilson (Fairbanks, Alaska) and taking part in the second heat, posted a third place finish (8:06.0) to advance to move on to the grand final. Facing several strong boats in the final, Clark finished sixth in 8:25.1, while event winner Connecticut College completed the course in 7:56.6.
Clark's novice eight boat of coxswain Wenlen Lawrence (Austin, Texas), Emily Ladda (Farmington, Conn.), Halley Glier (Shelburne, Mass.), Aubrey Hulbert (Reno, Nev.), Niki Lew (Auburndale, Mass.), Brenn Richards (New Paltz, N.Y.), Emily Thibault (Williamsville, Vt.), Holly Bauer (Portland, Conn.) and Katy Deng (Quincy, Mass.) finished fourth in the finals only event, recording a time of 7:51.4, besting contingents from Middlebury, Connecticut College and University of New England. Reigning NEWMAC Champion, Wellesley, took home the event crown with their time of 7:25.7.
