Worcester, Mass. – Rachel Spielberg, a familiar face among the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference rowing community, has been named an assistant coach at Clark University it has been announced by head coach Michael McDonald and confirmed by Interim Director of Athletics and Recreation, Trish Cronin.
Spielberg spent the 2012-13 rowing season as an assistant varsity coach and the novice women's coach at league rival Smith College while pursuing her master's degree in exercise and sports studies.
With the Cougars Spielberg will assist with all aspects of the program including player development, practice planning and student-athlete recruitment.
"I'm really excited about the potential for growth right now at Clark," said Spielberg. "The team is going through somewhat of a cultural shift right now, and I believe they could pick up a lot of speed in the near future. I wanted to be part of that change and help Coach McDonald make the team more competitive within our conference."
While with the Pioneers, she supervised on-water practices, land workouts, weight training sessions and on-campus recruiting, in addition to designing practice plans and assisting with fund raising.
Spielberg has had extensive experience in rowing develop initiatives, spending the summers of 2012 and 2013 working with the Quinsigamond Rowing Association. There she helped coach the competitive collegiate program and masters learn-to-row program.
For two years she ran several week-long, high school learn-to-row programs designed to expand interest for the Northampton Youth and Community Rowing, Inc. There, she also coached masters rowers both on-water and for winter training.
"I am very excited and our rowing program is fortunate, to welcome Coach Spielberg to Clark University as the assistant varsity coach," said McDonald. "She brings a tremendous amount of enthusiasm, knowledge and passion to our program and will be an excellent role model for our young team."
The 2013-14 season for the Cougars opens up on October 6 at the Textile Regatta in Lowell, Mass.
