Worcester, Mass. - The Springfield College men's tennis team picked up a critical New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory on Wednesday afternoon as it bested host Clark, 5-2, at Corsash Tennis Courts.
With the win, Springfield boosted its record to 11-4, 3-2 in conference play, while Clark is now 6-8, 0-2.
The match started with singles play and the Pride won four matches to take a 4-2 lead heading into doubles play. Junior Lenny Siegel (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Alex Hattenbach (Wilton, Conn.) won at the number four and six singles spot respectively for Clark. Springfield's Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) eased his way to a 6-1, 6-3 win at the top singles spot, while Court Honda (Marioka, Japan) earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3. Alex Romaine (Stamford, Conn.) posted a 6-3, 7-6(3) victory for the Pride at No. 2, and Cameron Grant (Babylon, N.Y.) delivered a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) win at No. 5 singles to bring the Pride within one point of clinching the match.
In doubles play, the top team of Romaine and Honda sealed the match for Springfield with a 8-4 at the No. 1 spot.
Clark will travel to Emerson on Friday for a NEWMAC contest. Springfield will play its final regular-season home match on Saturday when it takes on Babson at 1:00 pm.
