Babson Park, Mass. – Clark University junior Diego Angel (Lima, Peru) has been named New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis singles player of the week it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
It marks the fourth consecutive week in which one of the Cougars have been named singles player of the week.
Angel picks up the award for the fourth time in his career after helping Clark extending its winning streak to eight matches with a 5-1 win over host Springfield. The win over the Pride marked their first win against a league opponent since 2006 – a span of 25 regular season matches.
Teaming up with freshman Zack Goodstein (Columbus, Ohio), Angel knocked off the Springfield duo of Doug Nickerson and Jesse Boyd, 9-7 at No. 1 doubles. He then went on to collect a straight set 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Kyle Mersereau.
Angel and his Clark teammates, now 8-1, enter the toughest stretch of their season beginning with Monday's trip to Gordon College. Following their match with the Scots, the Cougars host 12-time defending NEWMAC champion MIT on Wednesday and then MCLA on Thursday and Wheaton on Saturday.
