Cougars Finish 7th At NEWMAC Championships

Worcester, Mass. – The Clark University men's swimming and diving team completed their four-day stay at the 2017 NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships with a seventh place overall team finish on Sunday evening.

Eight-time reigning league champion MIT won their ninth consecutive conference title with 1,421 points. Coast Guard (1,099) and WPI (1,022) rounded out the top three teams.

The highlight of the day for the Scarlet and White came courtesy of the 400-yard medley relay squad consisting of Julian Ortega (West Palm Beach, Fla.), Dylan Schrama (Taunton, Mass.), Donovan Smith (Amherst, Mass.) and Eddie McCluskey (Hope, Maine). That foursome made it to the podium with an eighth place finish in a time of 3:20.76.

Meanwhile, both Bill Holloman (Avon, Conn.)  Johan Nel (Wayne, Maine) just missed out on advancing to the "B" final in the 200-yard breaststroke, recording times of 2:16.72 and 2:19.86, respectively.

Also, Julian Ortega finished eighth in the 200-yard butterfly "B" final in a time of 2:02.56, giving him the sixth and seventh fastest times in that event in school history.
