Maiorano Nets Two in 6-0 Victory Over Raiders

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University men's soccer team dominated the raiders of Rivier University taking a 6-0 shutout on Sunday afternoon. Five different Cougars added goals while freshman Alex Maiorano (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led the pack with five points on the day from two goals and an assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF

-Clark took the lead 28 minutes into the first half when a Rivier foul in the box sent junior Sean Munroe (Silver Spring, Md.) to line for a penalty kick. Munroe found space to the bottom right side of the keeper to give the Cougars the 1-0 advantage.

-Under 10 minutes later sophomore Patrick Clark (Plainville, Mass.) found first year, Derek Jones (Westford, Mass.) who knocked in his first collegiate goal (2-0). The Cougars continued to dominate the momentum of the game when the freshman duo of Maiorano and Gregory Amador (Westborough, Mass.) connected for the third tally of the game. Amador's goal gave the hosts the 3-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

SECOND HALF

-Another first year combo kicked off scoring in the second half. With 20 minutes off the clock freshman Brian Brennan (Stoneham, Mass.) dished the ball across the net to Maiorano who drilled in his first goal of the day for the 4-0 lead. Twelve minutes later Brennan found Maiorano again for his second goal of the game, putting the Cougars ahead 5-0.

-Clark kept the pressure on the Raider's defense and found time for one more goal in the 86th minute of play when Brennan put the ball past the outstretched arms of Rivier's goalkeeper and secured the 6-0 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Clark outshot Rivier 32 to 3 as the offense put 17 shots on net.

-Sophomore Collin Deyarmin (Raymond, N.H.) started in goal for the Raiders and made 11 saves in 76:18 of play. Freshman River Sutton (Kingman, Ariz.) came in for 13:32 of play.

-Sophomore Marco White (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) made two saves in net for Clark and earned the shutout.

-Maiorano notched two goals and an assist while Brennan recorded a goal and two assists. Munroe, Amador, and Jones all chipped in with one goal each.
