Men's Soccer Shuts Out WPI in Conference Battle

-The Lead: A two-goal performance from sophomore Sean Munroe (Silver Spring, Md.) lifted the Clark University men's soccer team over the Engineers of WPI on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.


-The Cougars wasted no time and hopped on the board just three minutes into play. Sophomore Evan Jurkowski (Ludlow, Mass.) found his classmate, Munroe, in the box who burried the ball past WPI senior goalkeeper, Connor Hoeckele (Granby, Conn.) for the early 1-0 lead.

-Clark started the second half the same as the first. Just two minutes in Munroe struck again on a feed from sophomore Trevor Sheridan (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) for his second goal of the game and 13th of the season.

-The two teams traded possesion over the next 43 minutes of play, but the Cougars were able to hold off the WPI offense to clinch the shutout.


-The Cougars and Engineers posted 12 shots each on the day and Clark held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

-Senior goalkeeper, Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.) made nine crucial saves in net for Clark and improves his record to 6-5-3 this season.

-Hoeckele made six saves for the Engineers and drops to 12-5-1 overall.


-Clark is headed into the NEWMAC tournament as the No. 4 seed. With the win today they will host the quarterfinals on Wednesday, October 31st against No. 5 MIT.

-WPI is also headed into tournament play as the No. 2 season. They play No. 3 Coast Guard in the semifinals on Saturday, November 4th at Springfield College.
