Worcester, Mass. – Freshman Evan Jurkowski (Ludlow, Mass.) scored the game-winner for Clark in a 2-1 double OT triumph over host WPI Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, the Cougars remain unbeaten at 6-0 while the Engineers suffer their first loss of the season (4-1-1). WPI entered the matchup 10th in the NSCAA Division III New England Coaches Poll and Clark entered at No. 7.
Jurkowski raced into the box and kicked the ball off the post before a WPI defender nearly saved it before crossing the plane. Junior Greg French (North Andover, Mass.) helped setup the game-ender.
The first two goals, in the form of penalty kicks, came nearly 20 minutes apart in the second half. Clark senior Zack Blais (Tiverton, R.I.) drilled the first one home at 6:50 and WPI junior Brendan Nemes (Kingston, Mass.) countered at 76:20.
Demetri Boumis (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) took aim in the 68th but Connor Hoeckele (Granby, Conn.) dove to his left and punched the ball away. Hoeckele finished with four saves for the Engineers, while Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.) stopped four for the Cougars in another stellar effort in goal.
Shots were even at (8-8), as were saves (4-4). Clark was awarded four of the seven corner kicks.
The Cougars put their undefeated record on the line on Wednesday night when they travel to Bridgewater State for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
