Men's Soccer Shuts Out RIC, 2-0, In Season Opener

Bristol, R.I. – Zack Blais (Tiverton, R.I.) found the back of the net twice and the Clark University men's soccer team opened up its 2016 season with a 2-0 win over Rhode Island College in non-league action at the Squad Locker Classic hosted by Roger Williams University on Saturday morning.

Records: Clark 1-0-0, Rhode Island College 0-1-0
Location: Bayside Field, Bristol, R.I.

How It Happened:
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars got on the board in the 68th minute when Blais was tripped up heading into the box and was awarded a penalty kick. He tucked his attempt into the right corner giving the Scarlet and White a 1-0 lead.

That advantage doubled in the 73rd minute, when freshman Charlie Lane (Southborough, Mass.) sent a pass to classmate Jonathan Guilherme (Oxford, Conn.) on the left side. Guilherme booted a cross to the middle to Blais, who knocked it on past a diving Chris Moura for his second score of the game.

Three Stars:
Playing less than 20 minutes from his hometown, Blais was the star of the morning, recording his third career multi-goal game.

Chris Moura was stellar in goal for the Anchormen, turning aside ten shots, including making a few stellar stops to keep the Cougars off the board, especially in the first half.

Clark split the goalkeeping duties with Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.) getting the start but it was Alistair Richardson (Tolland, Conn.) who made all five saves in goal for the Scarlet and White.

Coach Speak:
"It is always great to start the season off with a win," said Clark head coach Matt O'Toole. "Our backline and goalkeepers were extremely effective today in keeping a clean sheet while giving out attack time to make the most of our scoring chances."

What Else Happened:
The Cougars had a pair of good opportunities to score in the 22nd minute on shots by Julian Feshbach-Meriney (Concord, Mass.) and Sean Munroe (Silver Spring, Md.) but were turned away by Moura.

RIC's Dennis Vazquez managed to get a one-on-one chance in the 54th minute, but his try was punched away on a great stop by Richardson.

Two minutes later, Clark's Evan Jurkowski (Ludlow, Mass.) tried to beat Moura wide right on an open net, but a one-handed stop kept the Cougars off the board.

Up Next:
Clark will return to action on Sunday when they face the host Hawks at 1:30 p.m.
