Cougars Get Draw With Crosstown Lancers, 1-1

Worcester, Mass. – Zack Blais (Tiverton, R.I.) netted the equalizer in the game's 83rd minute, helping Clark University settle for a 1-1 tie with crosstown rival Worcester State on Friday evening in the second game of the 8th annual Worcester City Men's Soccer Tournament.

The Cougars will now play Becker College on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at WPI's Alumni Field, while the Lances will square off against the host Engineers at 2:30 on Sunday.

Clark held sizable leads in several categories but could never fully take advantage of the lopsided scoresheet, including a 20-8 edge in total shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Scarlet and White have not defeated Worcester State since 2012, having gone 0-2-1 since their 6-0 win on September 2, 2012.

Worcester State actually scored first in this contest when Bryan Brasil feed a long pass down the field to Jacob Jess and he tapped it in at 29:20.

Things stayed that way for close to 50 minutes of game time until Blais had a penalty kick thwarted by Tim Schmid but the rebound came right back to Blais who easily put it away for the game-tying goal at 82:11 – the second straight contest in which he has found the back of the net.

For his part, Schmid finished with 12 saves, while his counterpart, Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.) needed to make just one save to earn the tie.
