Boston, Mass. – For the first time in his career, Clark University goalkeeper Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.) has been named New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer defensive player of the week it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Maguire picks up the award after a 1-1 week for the Cougars in which they knocked off previously undefeated Coast Guard, who was ranked No. 23 in the country at the time.
In 180 minutes of action, Maguire allowed two goals and made ten saves – seven of which came in a 1-0 loss at Lasell College on Tuesday evening.
Then in Saturday's thrilling 2-1 win over the then 8-0 Bears, Maguire turned back three shots, including making a diving one-handed stop on a potential game-tying shot in the game's 72nd minute.
Maguire has started all ten games this season for the 4-6 Cougars who evened their conference record at 1-1 with Saturday's huge win.
So far this season he ranks first in the league in games started (10), minutes played (856:38), saves (56) and fifth in save percentage (.833).
Maguire and the rest of his Clark teammates will play two home games this week – Wednesday against the University of New England and then on Saturday they host Springfield in a key league showdown.
