Worcester, Mass. - Freshman Brendan Nemes scored his first collegiate goal to help propel WPI to a 1-0 victory against visiting city rival and NEWMAC-foe Clark on Saturday evening in the men's soccer conference opener for both teams at Alumni Stadium.
The Engineers improve to 6-1 on the year while Clark moves to 3-5.
Nemes tallied the lone goal of the contest at 67:22 off a feed from Matt Farrell (Groveland, Mass.), who notched his first collegiate assist after tallying 11 career goals, including eight as a rookie.
WPI netminder Connor Hoeckele (Granby, Conn.) made four stops in his fourth clean sheet of the season while his counterpart, freshman goalkeeper Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.), collected a game-best seven saves for the Cougars.
Clark's best scoring chance came in the in the 61st minute as senior Oscar Zapata (Lima, Peru) looked to head in a cross - however the ball ended up to the right of the goal.
Later in the frame, junior Kyle Russo (Westford, Mass.) tried to get the visitors on the board when he took aim in the 82nd minute following a corner kick that glanced off the iron.
With regulation coming to a close, freshman Greg French (North Andover, Mass.) had his corner kick flicked away by Hoeckele before Zapata got a cleat on the ball only to have it kicked toward the sidelines to seal the victory.
The first half saw WPI double up Clark in shots (8-4) and corner kicks (4-2). For the game, the Boynton Hillers claimed a 16-8 bulge in shots and 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Engineers close out a four-game homestand with Salve Regina on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Clark wraps up a four-game road trip on Tuesday with a trip to Lasell for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
