Worcester, Mass. – Senior striker Oscar Zapata (Lima, Peru) has been named captain of the 2014 men's soccer team at Clark University it was announced on Friday by head coach Matt O'Toole.
"Oscar has naturally stepped into leadership roles over the past two year with our program, and it was no surprise that his peers elected him to be their captain for the 2014 campaign," said O'Toole.
Zapata has been one of the NEWMAC's best scorers since his arrival in 2010. He is a two-time all-conference selection and was the only student-athlete at Clark to earn first-team all-league honors and academic all-conference accolades in 2013-14.
Last season he led the Cougars with 15 points (seven goals, one assist).
In 48 career games, Zapata has 24 goals and 51 career points – both of which rank in the program's top ten.
"The staff and I are looking forward to working with Oscar in his role as captain as we begin preseason training," said O'Toole.
Clark opens up preseason camp on Saturday, August 16 and their first contest will be on Friday, August 29 at home against Becker in the opening round of the Worcester City Tournament.
