King Breaks All-Time Goals Record in Fourth Annual Renny Classic

-The Lead: The Bears of Coast Guard Academy rallied their way to a 14-13 victory over the Clark men's lacrosse team in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday night. Clark hosted their fourth annual Renny Classic during the game to raise awareness and collect donations for the Alzheimer's Association in Worcester, Mass. Senior Brandon King (Eastham, Mass.) now holds the Clark men's lacrosse school record for career goals with 124 as his fourth goal of the game put him on top.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Clark outscored the Bears 7-2 after the first 15 minutes of play. They got on the board just a minute in with an unassisted goal by senior Jack Pierce (Westborough, Mass.). Junior Owen Lamerson (Greenlawn, N.Y.) found senior Brandon King (Eastham, Mass.) open for a goal at the 11:57 mark and just 20 seconds later junior Bobby Philbin (Ridgefield, Conn.) won the face-off and earned himself a goal for the 3-0 lead. King put in his second goal of the game in on an assist from junior Jack Mandracchia (Melrose, Mass.) with 7:13 on the clock and Philbin helped himself to another goal just 10 seconds later as the Cougars pulled ahead 5-0. King put in back-to-back goals at the 3:56 and 3:02 mark as his fourth goal of the game made him the all-time goal scorer for Clark men's lacrosse with 122 (7-0).

-Coast Guard got on the board with just over two minutes on the clock. Junior Riley McNulty (Annapols, Md.) dished the ball to senior Anthony Wyler (Fulton, Md.) who found the back of the net and just a minute later McNulty scored a goal of his own on an assist from sophomore Matty Johnson (Westport, Conn.) (7-2).

-Coast Guard outscored Clark 4-2 in the second period to come within three of the Cougars before the half (9-6). King added an unassisted goal at the 10:34 mark and Mandracchia scored on a feed from King (9-3) before the Bears went on a 5-0 run to end the half. Wyler added two in the rally while McNulty and senior Benner Geurtsen (Rodman, N.Y.) each added one.

-McNulty opened the third stanza with another goal for the Bears to bring them within two with 13:10 on the clock, 9-7. Juniors Chris Rasco (Huntington, N.Y.) and Andrew Hollerbach (West Hartford, Conn.) put up back-to-back goals at the 7:57 and 6:47 mark to extend Clark's lead back to four (11-7).

-Geurtsen found the back of the net at the 5:20 and 3:05 mark to bring the Bears within two (11-9) heading into the final stanza.

-The Cougars kicked off the fourth with goals from Mandracchia and King to pull ahead by four with 13:23 on the clock (13-9).

-Sophomore Will Iorio (Weaverville, N.C.) found Johnson for a tally at the 12:20 mark as the Bears trailed by three, 13-10. The Bears rallied for four more unanswered goals before the buzzer to claim the 14-13 final victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-King led the Cougars with six goals and two assists on the day. Philbin and Mandracchia finished with two goals each in the setback. Philbin picked up a team-high nine ground balls and went 15-for-20 in face-offs.

-McNulty Wyler and Geurtsen led the Bears to victory with four goals each. Wyler finished with three ground balls.

-Senior Nathan Maselek (Marblehead, Mass.) made an impressive 15 saves in net for the Cougars and falls to 3-5 on the season.

-Senior Trey Johnson (Millersville, Md.) made seven saves in goal for the Bears and improves to 7-2 this season.
