-The Lead: The Clark University men's lacrosse team defeated the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University in a 12-6 final on Saturday night. Junior Chris Rasco (Huntington, N.Y.) led the Cougars to victory with a total of six goals on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Clark hopped on the board first with a goal at the 13:30 mark with a tally from senior Jack Pierce (Westborough, Mass.). The visitors tied it up just over a minute later when Brett Chin (Framingham, Mass.) found the back of the net (1-1). The Cougars put up three more unanswered goals before the buzzer. Junior Jack Mandracchia (Melrose, Mass.) dished the ball to Rasco who fired his first tally of the day. Senior Brandon King (Eastham, Mass.) fired one past the Warriors goalkeeper with 2:39 on the clock for the 3-1 advantage heading into the second stanza.
-Junior Owen Lamerson (Greenlawn, N.Y.) found Pierce for his second goal of the game just under a minute into the second period. Rasco followed up with another goal of his own just four minutes later as the Cougars pulled ahead 5-1 with 9:47 on the clock. The Warriors got back on the board at the 9:14 mark when junior Jacob Testa (Southington) took it to goal himself to bring them within three, 5-2. The Cougars used back-to-back tallies from Rasco to extend their lead to 8-3 heading into the halftime break.
-Clark opened scoring in the third stanza as Rasco posted his fifth goal of the game and the visitors responded at the 7:30 mark when sophomore Jake Liebowitz (Trumbull) scored in a man-up opportunity. Lamerson found King who found the back of the net one last time in the period as the Cougars took a 10-4 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
-Eastern Connecticut scored first in the fourth quarter with a goal from senior Matthew Rougeot (Cheshire) and Liebowitz on the assist in a man-down situation (10-5). Rasco and first year Jacob Brydon (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) combined for Clark's final two goals of the game before the Warriors ralled for three more before the buzzer. Liebowitz, Payten Nevins (Hamden), and Rougeot posted the final three goals but the Cougars held on for the final 12-8 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Rasco led Clark with six goals while King added three, Pierce added two, and Brydson tallied one. Lamerson finished with a team high three assists. Senior Sam Wogan (Freeport, Maine) and first year Mark Zito (Lincoln, R.I.) grabbed four ground balls each and junior Bobby Philbin (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished 9-for-10 in face-offs.
-Liebowitz led Eastern Connecticut with two goals and an assist to go along with two ground balls. Jack Lombardo scooped up a team high three ground balls.
-Senior Nathan Maselek (Marblehead, Mass.) improves to 1-4 on the season and made five saves in the victory for Clark. First year Ryan Mickelson (Mattawan, Mich.) also made five saves in the victory for Clark.
-Junior Jack Farrell (Stratford) falls to 2-1 as he made six saves in the setback.
-Clark finished 18-for-20 in clear attempts while the Warriors finished 16-for-18.
-The Cougars won 18-of-22 face-offs.
-Clark hosts Curry College on Wednesday, March 20th at 7:00 p.m.
-The Warriors are back at home on the same day to host Roger Williams at 4:00 p.m.
