Wesleyan Tops Clark in Non-Conference Contest

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University men's lacrosse team suffered a setback on the road to the seventh-ranked Cardinals of Wesleyan University on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Wesleyan edged Clark in scoring 4-3 in the first quarter. The two teams traded goals to start the game with Wesleyan getting on the board first on a tally from Senior Carter Hawthorne (Massapequa, N.Y.), and the Cougars responding with a tally from senior Brandon King (Eastham, Mass.). Wesleyan regained a one point lead for the remainder of the quarter.

-The hosts did not give up a goal in the second quarter and went on to outscore the Cougars 5-0 to pull ahead 9-3. Hawthorne added a goal while sophomore Ronan Jacoby (Glastonbury, Conn.) tallied two more, and senior Zander Kotsen (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Colin Uyeki (North Haven, Conn.) both put up their second goal of the half to extend the Cardinal's lead to six heading into the halftime break (9-3).

-The Cardinals added two more goals before the Cougars broke their run when first year Benjamin Hollerbach (West Hartford, Conn.) found the back of the net on a feed from senior Jack Pierce (Westborough, Mass.) (11-4). The hosts scored their last two goals of the game in the final three minutes of the third quarter to take a 13-4 advantage into the final stanza.

-Clark outscored Wesleyan 2-0 in the fourth quarter with goals from junior Chris Rasco (Huntington, N.Y.) and King, but the Cardinals held on for the final 13-6 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-King led the Cougars with three points from two goals and an assist. Rasco added two goals while Hollerbach and junior Bobby Philbin (Ridgefield, Conn.) each added one for Clark. Philbin also led Clark was six groundballs.

-Philbin won 11-of-15 face-offs and first year Mark Zito (Lincoln, R.I.) finished 3-for-8 as Clark finished 14-for-23 overall.

-Hawthorne led the Cardinals with five points from three goals and two assists in the victory. Jacoby and Kotsen each finished with four points from three goals and one assist.

-Junior Zach Zavalick (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished 5-for-11 in faceoffs. Sophomore Sean Penney (Simsbury, Conn.) grabbed a team high six groundballs.

-Senior Nathan Maselek (Marblehead, Mass.) finished with 15 saves as he falls to 1-4 this season. Senior Thomas Berzok (East Brunswick, N.J.) and first year Ryan Mickelson (Mattawan, Mich.) each saw time in net and mad three saves apiece.

-Junior Otto Bohan (Westlake, Ohio) made eight saves in the victory for Wesleyan as he improves to 3-1 this season.
