DeSales Pushes Past Clark, 14-12

THE BASICS

-Score: DeSales University 14, Clark University 12

-Records: DeSales (5-0), Clark (1-2)

-Location: Clearwater, Fla.

-The Lead: In a game that saw three ties, the DeSales University Bulldogs were able to defeat the Clark University men's lacrosse team in non-conference action in Clearwater, Florida on Thursday morning. Despite the tight matchup, the Bulldogs never trailed over the four quarters.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-DeSales scored three of the first four goals to take an early 3-1 lead in the first stanza.

-Junior Bobby Philbin (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored at the end of the first quarter to bring the Cougars within one and senior Jack Pierce (Westborough, Mass.) dished the ball to junior Chris Rasco (Huntington, N.Y.) in the opening two minutes of the second quarter to bury the equalizer with 13:44 on the clock.

-Tied at three, the Bulldogs scored four straight to take a 7-3 lead before Clark answered with four straight of their own between the end of the second quarter and start of the third quarter to re-tie the game at seven. Junior Jack Mandracchia (Melrose, Mass.) put up two goals in the run while Rasco and senior Brandon King (Eastham, Mass.) each tallied a goal to tie the game at 7-7.

-Once again DSU had the answer, scoring its second straight string of four straight goals to take an 11-7 lead.

-Clark battled back to get within one (13-12) with 9:34 to go in the fourth quarter but senior Joe Neggia (Kinnelon, N.J.) scored with 6:52 to go to provide some insurance and the Bulldogs held on from there for the ultimate 14-12 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Rasco led Clark with three goals.

-Philbin had 14 face-offs and a team-leading 10 ground balls to go along with one goal.

-Senior Nathan Maselek (Marblehead, Mass.) finished with 19 saves as he falls to 1-2 on the season.

-Neggia led DeSales the scoring attack with five goals.

-Sophomore Zach Bowen (Middletown, Del.) also had five points finishing with four goals and an assist and junior Justin Monaghan (Swarthmore, Penn.) had four assists.

-Krug finished with five caused turnovers and four ground balls for DeSales.

-Senior Matt Barry finished with 15 saves as he improves to 5-0 this season.

-Clark finished with 37 ground balls and eight caused turnovers.

-DeSales picked up a total of 31 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers.

-Clark takes on Saint John Fisher on Saturday, March 9th at 12:00 p.m. in Clearwater, Florida.

-The Bulldogs don't return to action till Wednesday when they host Moravian College in a non-conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
