-The Lead: The Clark University men's lacrosse team faced a setback to the Golden Bears of Western New England University in a non-conference home-opener on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Cougars got on the board just seconds into the first quarter when junior Bobby Philbin (Ridgefield, Conn.) won the first face-off and found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Jacob Brandes (Chappaqua, N.Y.) added a goal just five minutes later to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage at the 9:42 mark. Western New England was able to put two on the board in the first quarter but the Cougars held onto a 3-2 lead after the first 15 minutes.
-The Golden Bears tied the game just under two minutes into the second period on a tally from sophomore Kevin Fautich (Seymour, Conn.). The visitors did not give up another goal before the half and added four more to take a 7-3 lead into the break. First year Mike Bannon (Edmond, Okla.) led Western New England at the half with two goals while Matt Greer added a goal and two assists.
-The visitors added four more goals before Clark was able to get on the board again at the 8:21 mark in the third quarter on another tally from Philbin (11-4). Senior Brandon King (Eastham, Mass.) posted two goals with less than two minutes on the clock to bring the Cougars within eight. Junior Nick Gamba (East Islip, N.Y.) put up three goals in third to help lift the Golden Bears to a 14-6 lead heading into the final stanza.
-Clark edged Western New England in scoring in the fourth, 4-3, but the Golden Bears were able to hold on for the final 17-10 victory. King added two more goals and an assist for Clark in the fourth while Gamba fired in his fifth and final goal of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Gamba led the Golden Bears with a game-high five goals while sophomore Matt Greer (South Windsor, Conn.) finished with four assists. Senior Hunter Cocks (Walden, N.Y.) finished the day with a team-high seven groundballs and won 10 of 21 face-offs.
-King led the Cougars with four goals and an assist and senior Jack Pierce (Westborough, Mass.) finished the day with a team-high two assists.
-Senior Nathan Maselek (Marblehead, Mass.) made an impressive 15 saves in net for Clark as he falls to 1-1 on the season. First year Ryan Mickelson (Mattawan, Mich.) checked into the game for the final quarter and made four saves for the Cougars.
-Junior Sean McCusker (Northport, N.Y.) grabbed 11 saves in Western New England's season opener as they improve to 1-0.
-Clark collected a total of 31 groundballs while the Golden Bears finished with 28.
-The Cougars won 18-of-31 face-offs.
-Clark travels to Skidmore College on Wednesday, February 27th for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
-Western New England hosts Keene State on Tuesday, February 26th at 4:00 p.m.
