Clark Overwhelms Mass. Maritime in NEWMAC Showdown

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University men's lacrosse team extended their winning streak to four games as they clinched a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup with the Buccaneers of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Cougars set the momentum of the game in the first five minutes when they took an early 3-0 lead. Sophomore Chris Rasco (Huntington, N.Y.) opened up scoring when he put Clark on the board just under two minutes into play on an assist from senior Will Mandracchia (Melrose, Mass.). Junior Brandon King (Eastham, Mass.)  extended their lead to 3-0 with back-to-back goals at the 12:03 and 10:21 marks.

-The Buccaneers broke up the run with a goal from junior Jack Moran (Mashpee, Mass.) on a feed from sophomore Michael Sharry (Braintree, Mass.) with 10:14 on the clock (3-1). Clark responded with a tally from junior Jack Pierce (Westborough, Mass.) on Mandracchia's third assist of the day (4-1).

-Massachusetts Maritime rallied two goals from Kenneth Parnell (Marshfield, Mass.) (Moran) and first year Trey Guerrini (Foxborough, Mass.) (Andrew Franks (North Falmouth, Mass.)) to close out the first stanza trailing by just one (4-3).

-Clark outscored the visitors 3-0 in the second quarter. Mandracchia posted goals at the 13:57 and 12:03 mark to extend their lead to 6-3. With 2:36 on the clock sophomore Owen Lamerson (Greenlawn, N.Y.) fed the ball to his classmate Andrew Hollerbach (West Hartford, Conn.) who buried one to the back of the net for the 7-3 lead heading into the halftime break.

-The first 6:30 of play in the third quarter were scoreless until freshman Alexandre Lucas (Walpole, Mass.) found his way to the net to bring the Buccaneers within three with 8:34 on the clock (7-4).

-Clark freshman Jacob Brandes (Chappaqua, N.Y.) started a run for the Cougars when he fired up back-to-back unassisted goals to put the Cougars up 9-4. Brandes assisted another Madracchia goal and King rolled off the momentum with another goal of his own to give Clark the 11-4 lead heading into the final stanza.

-The final quarter saw a total of 11 goals as the Buccaneers outscored Clark 6-5. Quincy Milton III (Seattle, Wash.) earned credit for two of Clark's goals while Brandes added his third on an assist from sophomore Bobby Philbin (Ridgefield, Conn.). Rasco and Pierce accounted for the other two goals as the Cougars took the ultimate 16-10 NEWMAC victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Mandracchia led the Cougars offensively with six points from three goals and three assists in the victory. King and Brandes each posted four points from three goals and an assist. Philbin posted a game high seven ground balls and won 11-of-16 face-offs for Clark.

-Junior goalkeeper Nathan Maselek (Marblehead, Mass.) claimed the win in net for Clark making seven saves in 51:05 of play. He improves to 8-4 this season.

-Senior Keaghan Bartley (Henrico, Va.) led the Buccaneers with three points from two goals and an assist in the setback.

-Clark edged Mass. Maritime in shots (35-34) and ground balls (39-31).
