Clark Cruises to Victory Over Wheaton in 3rd Annual Renny Classic

-The Lead: The Clark University men's lacrosse team cruised to a 12-10 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over the Wheaton College Lyons on Saturday evening in the third annual Renny Classic (Alzheimer's Awareness) game. The Cougars raised close to $3,000 to donate to the Alzheimer's Association in Worcester, Mass.


-Clark set the pace of the game with six first quarter goals and an early 5-0 lead. Junior Brandon King (Eastham, Mass.) put the first goal in on a dish from junior Sam Wogan (Freeport, Maine) (1-0). Just 30 seconds later junior Jack Pierce (Westborough, Mass.) put one to the back of the net to extend Clark's lead to 2-0.

-With 11:44 on the clock freshman Mark DellaTorre (Bethany, Conn.) found sophomore Bobby Philbin (Ridgefield, Conn.) who found space behind the Wheaton goalkeeper for the 3-0 lead. Senior Will Mandracchia (Melrose, Mass.) found his way to the goal with 7:03 to play in the first before King notched his second goal of the game in a man-up situation on an assist from Pierce (5-0).

-Wheaton posted back-to-back goals at the 4:27 mark and 2:28 mark on tallies from junior Matt Morgan (York, Maine) and senior Scott Whear (Duxbury, Mass.) (5-2).

-The Cougars tallied one goal before the end of the first quarter when Mandracchia tossed it to King for the 6-3 advantage. The hosts added two more at the start of the 2nd quarter on goals from Mandracchia and Pierce (8-3).

-Senior Griffin Phaneuf (Manchester, N.H.) added one more goal for the Lyons with 1:54 on the clock, but the Cougars were the last to score before the half when Mandracchia notched his third goal of the game to give the Cougars the 9-4 lead heading into the break.

- The Lyons found momentum in the third, holding Clark to only two goals while they netted three, but the Cougar's held on to an 11-6 lead heading into the final stanza.

-Wheaton pushed back in the final quarter and was able to score four goals, but despite their efforts, it wouldn't be enough to catch Clark as the hosts ran away with the ultimate 12-10 NEWMAC victory.


-Mandracchia had a stellar night for the Cougars posting a game high six points on four goals and two assists. King followed his lead with five points of his own from another four goals and one assist. Pierce rounded up the leader board with four points from a pair of goals and assists.

-Philbin won an impressive 15 of 19 face-offs and collected a game high nine groundballs for Clark. Senior Will Roberts (Paxton, Mass.) was 3-for-7 in face-offs while adding a caused turnover.

-Nathan Maselek (Marblehead, Mass.) earned the win in net making 16 saves to improve his record to 7- 4 this season.


-Clark hosts the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers on Wednesday, April 18th in conference action at 7:00 p.m.

-Wheaton hosts Babson College on the same day for a NEWMAC matchup at 7:00 p.m.
