Men's Basketball Battles in Setback to Wheaton in Season Finale

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University men's basketball team fell to the Lyons of Wheaton College in a New England Women's and Men's matchup for their season finale on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.) led all scorers with 28 points for the Cougars.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Clark took a six point lead to start the game when Davern put up eight points in the first three minutes with two baskets from behind the arc and a layup (8-2). The Lyons tied the game at 13-13 when senior Duaka Ekwensi (Morris Plains, N.J.) put up back-to-back layups with 9:28 on the clock. On their next possession, Ekwensi found his classmate, David Carbonello (Windham, N.H.) behind the arc for three to put Wheaton ahead, 16-13, at the 8:38 mark. Sophomore Jake Malcom (Boothbay Maine) knocked down a three from the left side and finished the four-point play with a made free-throw to put the Lyons up by eight with 5:45 on the clock (25-17). The Cougars closed the gap to one when sophomore Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.) found space behind the arc for three with under two minutes to play (27-26). The Lyons finished the half with a three from senior Niles Cohen (Cambridge, Mass.) to pull ahead by four heading into the break, 32-28.

-Davern led the Cougars in scoring with 10 points in the first half while Carbonello matched his ten points to lead the Lyons through the first 20 minutes.

-Clark came out of the break strong, tying the game up on a drive to the hoop from senior Brendan Kittredge (Clinton, Mass.) (34-34) and pulling ahead by four when sophomore Charles Stevens (Bronx, N.Y.) sank a three and finished a four-point play with a made free-throw at the 16:48 mark (38-34). Gayman found Davern in the left corner for three to extend Clark's lead to eight with 7:49 on the clock (63-55). The Cougars led by as many as 11 points in the second half when Gayman sank a three-pointer at the 5:14 mark, 71-60. Wheaton rallied back with 10 unanswered points to regain the lead with just 1:33 to play, 72-71. Sophomore Ricardo Ripley (Sharon, Mass.) put up six points in the run to put the Lyons back on top. Senior Riley Tetreault (Walpole, Mass.) pulled up for three with 26 seconds to play to help secure the three-point final victory, 78-75.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Davern led Clark with 28 points to go along with four rebounds and a steal on the day. Gayman added 16 points and seven assists while Kittredge rounded out double-digit scoring with 10 points for the hosts.

-Carbonello led Wheaton with 21 points and six rebounds. Ripley and junior Robby Lowey (Foxboro, Mass.)put up 11 points each while junior Matt Allegrezza (Westwood, Mass.) came off the bench with 10 points for the Lions.

-Wheaton finished the day shooting 50% from the field while Clark finished shooting 41.3%.

-The Lyons outrebounded Clark 40-28.

-Wheaton shot 84.2% from the free-throw line (16-for-19) while the Cougars shot 65% (13-for-20).

-Clark forced 12 Wheaton turnovers and converted them into seven points of their own.

-Wheaton forced Clark to turn the ball over nine times and turned those into 16 points of their own.

-The game saw a total of two ties and four lead changes.
