Men's Basketball Battles to Setback with Bears

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University men's basketball team fell to the Bears of Coast Guard Academy on the road on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The Bears sealed the deal with under one minute to play when junior Noah Baldez (Lower Gwynedd, Penn.) hit back-to-back baskets to give the Bears the final two-point victory, 68-66.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-In a first half that saw four ties and 12 lead changes, the Bears were able to pull ahead by nine before the halftime break. Gayman led the Cougars through the first 20 minutes putting up 10 points on a 5-for-7 performance from the field. Junior Packy Witkowski (Melrose, Mass.) led Coast Guard in the first half with 11 points as he went 3-for-5 from three-point range. The Bears took a 41-32 advantage into the halftime break.

-Clark pulled within five of the Bears when sophomore Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.) sank a three-pointer and made a drive to the basket with 12:13 on the clock (52-47). A pair of made free-throws from senior Brendan Kittredge (Clinton, Mass.) closed the gap to just three before a made basket from the line from Davern evened the score at 56-56 with 6:43 to play. After Clark pulled ahead by two on a jumper from sophomore Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.), Baldez put up back-to-back baskets for the Bears with under a minute to play to capture the 68-66 final victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Gayman led all players with 22 points for the Cougars. Davern added 10 points and a team-leading seven rebounds while first year Alex Nazaire (Ellicott City, Md.) came off the bench with 10 points for Clark.

-Witkowski and Baldez each added 16 points for the Bears while junior Justin Kane (Arnold, Md.) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

-Clark shot 43.8% from the field while Coast Guard shot 37.5%.

-The Bears outrebounded Clark 44-34.

-Clark shot 87.5% from the free throw line (7-for-8). Coast Guard shot 67.4% from the charity stripe (11-for-17).

-Clark forced the Bears to turn the ball over 19 times and converted those into 2 points of their own. Coast Guard forced 16 Clark turnovers and turned them into 19 points of their own.
