-The Lead: The Clark University men's basketball team faced a setback to the Lions of Emerson College on Wednesday evening in the Kneller Athletic Center. The Lions were paced by senior Geoffrey Gray (Newton, Mass.) who put up 26 points in the victory. The game saw a total of four ties and eight lead changes before the Lions were able to pull away with the final 88-79 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Lions led by as many as 12 points twice in the first half before Clark was able to close the gap to six before the halftime break. Gray and junior Jack O'Connor (Newport, R.I.) put up 12 points each in the first half for Emerson. Sophomore Charles Stevens (Bronx, N.Y.) came off the bench with a team leading 10 points for Clark in the first. He was 3-for-3 from behind the arc. After pulling ahead by 12 points on a three-pointer from Gray at the 8:53 mark, Clark rallied with nine points capped off with a three from Stevens to pull within three with 6:32 of the clock (29-26). The Lions took a 44-38 advantage into the halftime break.
-After the Lions pulled ahead by seven on a layup from O'Connnor, Clark sophomore Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.) sank a three-pointer with 15:02 on the clock in the second half to bring the Cougars within two, 52-50. Sophomore Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.) found first year Antonio Lapeyrolerie (Plano, Texas) behind the arc for three with 12:52 to play as the Cougars trailed by just one 56-55. Stevens and Davern hit back-to-back three pointers to tie the game at 61-61 before a drive to hoop from Gayman put the hosts ahead, 63-61. Gray hit two free-throws with 7:38 to play to tie the game at 68-68. O'Connor followed up with a three-pointer and Gray found his way under the hoop to put the Lions back up by five with 6:37 to play, 73-68. The Lions finished the half outscoring Clark 44-41 to take the final 88-79 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Gayman finished leading Clark in scoring with 22 points. Brendan Kittredge (Clinton, Mass.) finished the night with a double-double, putting up 15 points and 10 rebounds. Davern finished with 16 points and Stevens rounded out double-digit scoring with 13 points for Clark.
-Gray led the Lions to victory with 26 points and nine rebounds. O'Connor put up 21 points and Jarred Houston added 11 points to round out the top-scorers for Emerson.
-Emerson and Clark both shot 45.6% from the field.
-Clark edged the Lions in rebounding, 36-29.
-Emerson shot 82.8% from the free-throw line (24-for-29) and Clark shot 76.2% (16-for-21)
-Emerson forced Clark to turn the ball over 22 times and turned those into 25 points of their own. Clark forced 14 Emerson turnovers and turned them into 13 points.
-Clark travels to the Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, February 9th for a NEWMAC contest at 1:00 p.m.
-Emerson hosts WPI in conference action on the same day at 1:00 p.m.
