Men's Basketball Drops to Springfield Despite Second Half Comeback

THE BASICS

-Score: Springfield College 61, Clark University 53

-Records: Clark University (5-14, NEWMAC 1-7) Springfield College (7-12, NEWMAC 4-4)

-Location: Springfield, Mass. (Blake Arena)

-The Lead: The Clark University men's basketball team fell to Springfield College 61-53 on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.)  lead Clark with a team high 18 points and nine rebounds on the day. 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Cougars got out to a quick lead with a layup from Davern just about a minute into the game (2-0). Springfield responded by going on a 9-0 run with junior Trey Witter (Unionville, Conn.) knocking down three free throws, followed by junior Jake Ross (Northampton, Mass.) scoring two baskets in the paint (11-2).Clark fought back and went on an five point run after a layup and made three pointer from first year Antonio Lapeyrolerie (Plano, Texas) (11-7).

-Davern connected on a three pointer with just over nine minutes to play in the half to close the gap to just three points (13-10). Springfield responded with a 8-0 run after a three pointer and free throw from junior Heath Post (Cheshire, Conn.), a layup from Witter and sophomore Deonte Sandifer (Pittsfield, Mass.) (21-10). Clark was able to close the half with a layup from senior Denis Tobin (Medway, Mass.),a pair of free throws from sophomore Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.), and another bucket from Davern (40-19).

-Clark started out the second half strong by going on a 14-2 run after a pair of free throws and a jump shot and layup from senior Brendan Kittredge (Clinton, Mass.), three strong baskets from Davern, and an additional basket from first year Joel Arteaga (Wyncote, Penn.)to bring the Pride's lead back to single digits (40-31).

-With just under 10 minutes to play, Clark was able to erase the deficit and take their first lead since the one-minute mark after two more baskets from Davern, a jumper from Gayman, and two layups from senior Adam Converse (Woodstock, Conn.) (44-42). After a free throw from Springfield's Ross, we were all tied up at 50 with just over two minutes to play in the game. After two layups from Ross and Witter, Springfield was able to retake a five-point lead with 45 seconds left in the game. Despite a three pointer by Clark's Kittredge, Springfield was able to close the game with six made free throws to take the game 61-53.

  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

-Ross lead all scorers on the day with 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Pride. Davern lead the way for the Cougars with 18 points and 9 rebounds, while teammate Kittredge added 11 points and five assists in the loss

-The Pride shot 36% from the floor while the Cougars shot 31%.

-Clark forced Springfield into 13 turnovers which they converted into 16 points. Clark turned the ball just six times, which lead to six points for Springfield.
