Gayman, Arteaga Duo Lifts Clark to Victory Over Becker

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University men's basketball team defeated the Hawks of Becker College in a non-conference contest on Thursday evening. Sophomore Biko Gayman (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and first year Joel Arteaga (Wyncote, Penn.) combined for 31 points to lead the Cougars to victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Clark used an early 4-0 rally at the 13:14 mark with layups from sophomore Matthew Waggett (Saugus, Mass.) and his classmate Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.), a jumper from first year Arteaga, and a three from sophomore Anthony Grzembski (Webster, Mass.) to pull ahead 15-9 early in the half. The hosts pulled ahead by 12 when junior Brendan Kittredge (Clinton, Mass.) and Arteaga knocked down back-to-back three-pointers with under 10 minutes to play. The Hawks put up four points in the last two minutes of the half when seniors Kareem Davis (Lowell, Mass.) and Dewayne Thomas (Lowell, Mass.) made successful drives to the basket to bring them back within nine heading into the halftime break (31-22).

-Kittredge paced the Cougars with nine points in the first half while Becker's Thomas matched that with nine points for the visitors. The Hawks held a slight advantage in rebounding through the first 20 minutes of play, 19-16.

-The Hawks came alive to start the second half when they put up seven points in the first two minutes. First year Byron Salfran (Miami, Fla.)  got things started with a basket from behind the arc followed by back-to-back layups from Davis and sophomore Marquis Hawkins (Hartford, Conn.) to bring them within two (31-29). The Cougars crept back to a seven point lead with baskets from Arteaga, Davern, and a three from first year Sean Christy (Cumberland, R.I.) (42-35). The Hawks quickly responded with five points capitalized on a three from Davis to come within two with just under 10 minutes to play. Davis finished a three-point play at the seven minute mark to tie the game for just the second time (46-46). The Hawks were able to stay within one until the final 50 seconds when Clark's Arteaga sealed the deal with his third three pointer of the night. Clark took away the final 63-57 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Gayman led the Cougars with 17 points on the night to go along with six rebounds. Arteaga added a clutch 14 points while Kittredge finished the night with 11 points. Davern led Clark under the boards with eight rebounds.

-Davis led Becker with 22 points while Thomas added 18 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Jamir Carr (Philadelphia, Penn.) secured a double-double with his 10 points and 10 rebounds.

-Clark shot 44.6% from the field while Becker shot 37.7%.

-The Cougars edged the Hawks in rebounding, 37-35.

-Becker forced 12 Clark rebounds and converted them into 13 points. Clark forced Becker to turn the ball over nine times and added eight points off of those.

-Clark hosts Regis College on Saturday, December 1st for a non-conference matchup at 1:00 p.m.

-Becker is back at home on the same day for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off with Bridgewater State.
